Why a dolly wheel?

I've never owned or operated a bar rake with a dolly wheel and have always wondered what the benefit is, if any, over the bar rakes I have always used that rest on the drawbar of the tractor. More often than not, I see the later model JD bar rakes with them. Anyone have some insight?

Less skipped hay in a rough field. Eliminates the undulation caused from the front wheels of the tractor.

elimates the hard hooking up is what i like most, but if you travel alot and have to pull it down the road i'm not sure that the dolly wheel will track good over a long distance. i use to cut for the public and made the back fhalf of a wrecker out of spare parts with a hand cranked winch on it and used it to load the hay rakes on one of my hay hauling trailers. i didn't have a front end loader. hauling them is better on the u joints when pulling them any distance

The dolly wheel makes it very easy to hook up.

Be very careful if you need to make a sharp turn in the field.

The dolly wheel makes it impossible to back up with a tractor.

Before we ran out of storage space, I parked it on a downward incline and then I pushed it backwards under the shed.

Our other parts rake does not have a dolly wheel and the frame apparently either cracked or broke.

Previous owner(s) did a lot of patch welding on the frame.

No vertical pivot, provided by dolly wheel hitch, to absorb shock on tractor draw bar.<p<Hope this helps.

Yeah, I agree, they must be a real pain when backing up. I am surprised that no one has made an adapter bracket that goes around the neck of the rake frame and pins through the top of the dolly wheel frame. Seems like an easy solution.

I agree that the rakes with a dolly wheel put much less stress on the main rake frame. I have seen many drawbar-resting bar rakes with reinforced welds where the frame has cracked somewhere on the neck.

Nice photo and video. Looks like you enjoy using, and taking care of, your old JD stuff!

The rake follows the contours of the ground better getting all the hay. My cousin has both styles and chooses the dolly wheel over the non dolly wheel. His ground is rolling.

Hey John,

We always disconnected the driveshaft on our 256 New Holland rake whenever we pulled it more'n a couple miles down the road.

The rakes dad and I have used are IH and original horse drawn, converted to tractor. Two drive wheels and 2 trailers make both 3 bar rakes easy to handle. They follow ground contour and unlike Mr. Howell's rake, you can back them up as far as you want (sorry James, just couldn't pass that up!)

Thanks for the compliment.

We do enjoy the older JD tractors and equipment.

Take a lot of photos to document progress and display to others if/when they may need help.

Take a lot of videos to document "action/use/work" of the tractors and equipment.

No harm done; please call me James - Mr. Howell was my father.

Take a look at our McCormick on steel

Broke the drive chain while using it; so one of these days . . .
