Diesel Leaking...

I have a JD 2240 that is now leaking diesel fuel from the area indictated in the picture. I checked on the JD site & it looks like there might be a couple of O-Rings that could be my problem.

Anyone have any experience with this? Is this something the average person could fix?

Thanks

There's simply an "O" ring in there.

To replace it, CLEANLINESS is important, as well as keeping the linkage inside in the proper arrangement so it doesn't bind up and lead to an uncontrollable engine overspeed at startup.

Massey used pretty much the same pump, and, if you surf over to the Massey section of this site and enter "injection pump leak" or something of that nature in the search box, you will find one or more threads that explain in detail how to remove the pump cover and replace the "O" ring.

Yes , mostly when on-road fuel is being used, it causes the o-ring to swell up and then the shaft movement cuts the o-ring, you are pointing at the stop lever the throtle lever will leak next...If you sent the pump out have both changed.

If you can get the ring(s) through Deere, that's what I would use. HOPEFULLY they would be of the proper material to be most resistant to today's fuels.

Did you find any of the threads on the Massey Board explaining how to change them?

Bob-

In concern with fuel resistant o-rings, I have found based on a visit to the JD dealer that they simply go in the back and get o-rings out of a large sorting box. This is a larger version of the general o-ring kit you might find in a harbor freight or a similar "sells-everything" store.

These o-rings at the dealer are often the right diameter; HOWEVER, they are often different in size. More than likely, they are NOT fuel resistant.

Whenever I buy O-rings, I always have them ordered from the parts warehouse (in my case, the syracuse warehouse) - these are the correct o-rings for whatever application.

The same goes for bolts - often, a regular bolt is substituted for a special bolt with a shoulder on it. They just go back to their bolt bin and grab them. When ordered from the parts warehouse, they are packaged and correct.

I believe that is a cav. pump.take the throttle arm nut off so you can push the shaft downward as you raise the cap.there is a spring attached inside that you dont want to strech or come out of its position.the shutoff lever and shaft can be left intact until you remove the cap

Syracuse warehouse? Some how I thought you were in Maryland. If so is that the closest warehouse or are you up here in NY?

I am in MD. There is no parts warehouse in the Mid-Atlantic. The huge parts warehouse about 10 miles south of me closed back in the late 80's.

There "is' a differnce in o-rings not only in size but in material, the 'new' fuels are tough on old style o-rings, if there is a diesel shop close to you get them there, they will know what you need.
