7200 vacume planter

question for you deere techs on a 7200 vacume planter.

both the pressure and return lines from the hyd blower motor are connected to the tractors SCV. Do I remember that the return line should dump to sump so the blower can free wheel when you kill the flow with the SCV?

This planter keeps shearing the drive key.... blower is ok and motor shaft is ok... no damage seen on both and key fits tightly in shaft and blower.

I think the sudden stop when the SCV is kicked to netural is causing the problem but its been afew yrs since I worked in a green shop.

I seen to recall adding a hyd fitting and dumping return oil to sump bypassing the SCV.

Am I a confused old man or just dreaming?

I dont know what tractor You are using which would be nice to know; But there are at least 2 types of systems in tractors. 1) Closed Center, & 2) Open Center hydraulic systems. My owners manual (7200) OM - H138091 Issue F-8 says...

AUXILLERY RETURN LINE COUPLER ATTACHMENT: if planter is equipped with vacuum meters, The Auxillary Return Line Attachment must be installed on 50 series tractors to eliminate possible damage to the pump motor seals from SCV flow checking & improper operation of the pump SCV lever.

On page 20-1 There is an important message... DO NOT USE OPEN CENTER TRACTOR HYDRAULICS SYSTEMS TO OPERATE VACUUM PUMP. PERMANENT DAMAGE TO TRACTOR PUMP COULD RESULT!!!

I have no idea if this helps; but hope it does!

Rob, your guess on what is shearing the drive key is right. On any hydraulic motor you want to let it coast to a stop. This is done by putting the SCV in float or stopping the engine. You can also do it with an "open to sump" return. Do NOT just shut off the SCV. Doing so causes a pressure spike that causes exactly the problem you have been experiencing. Hope this helps. Mike
