Would anyone give me pros and cons of a JD 40 to be used with a back blade for mostly snow removal? Also, ballpark prices. Tractor is in good overall condition, runs good has oversize rear tires, good tread, could use paint. Otherwise seems sound. Thanks for any info

Much better then a 8N Ford as you have live hyd.

No cons I can think of ? except depending on how much snow you get and how fast you want to remove it. My model M did a fine job in the heavy wet snow but was pretty slow. I can move more faster with a walk behind snowblower. That is what I use now.

Snow? What's that? Just kidding, I live in Georgia but grew up in the blizzard state of Nebraska.

My JD 40 works great with a 5' scraper blade for moving dirt so I would imagine it would work fine on snow.

I think the 40 is a great little tractor with a nice hydraulic system. As for a price, a lot depends on where you live, but a running 40 with good tires, and decent sheet metal but needing paint is probably worth $2000 to $2500. Make sure the three point stays up with a load on it(engine off) and also check closely for cracks in the block behind the carb and at each end of the head. This is where it will crack if allowed to freeze.

I'm in central Ohio and I think $2000 to $2500 is a little low for that tractor around here. They are a really good tractor for a lot of jobs. I have a 40-W that I've completely restored and I wouldn't take $5000 for it. rw

James, thanks for the reply. A friend of mine has it for sale, don't know what he is asking yet. We have 12 in. of snow on the ground now with more expected. Then later this week temp. is to be about 0 I do have a 10 hp snowblower, but the little 2-4 in snows is what I was looking to scrape off. Plus , some dirt work in the summer. Thanks Joe

Rusty, I am located east of Cleveland, in the snow belt. My friend bought this tractor 11/2 yrs ago for 2500 will probley try to make a few bucks. Based on all the replys it sounds like it would work out. I would need to find a reasonable priced blade. Did they make a front mount blade for the 40 like the one on the M ?
First I have to sell my 60. Thanks for the reply. Joe

The lack of power steering and direction reverser make the 40 a little less user friendly for blade work than a 420/430 BUT if you're in good shape it shouldn't be a problem! ;)

Adding some extra weight and tire chains might be necessary as well depending on conditions.................

One thing is for sure though, if the tractor has good compression, is tuned-up properly, and has proper winter oil(0W30), it'll start whenever you need it! I've started our 40U at -40F WITHOUT engine pre-heat. Although it has been converted to 12V and is still utilizing a 6 V starter(great cranking speed!)......................
