John Deere 4040 vs 4440

I am currently looking at a John Deere 4440 and a 4040. The tractor will be used for light tillage, plowing with a 4 or 5 bottom plow, and hay work. I know there is a engine size difference and also a horsepower difference. Does anybody know the fuel consumption difference between these 2 tractors?

Thanks,

We have one of each. I would prefer the 4440. It will burn a little more fuel. You can do the same work with the 4440 as the 4040 with reserve power.

a 4040 is exactly the same tractor as a 4230,,stock form 100 hp. no more, on a hard pull 5.5 gal/per hr. a 4440 a strong 145 hp on a hard pull 6-7 gal per hr....a 4440 is probably one of the best tractors John Deere ever made,,turn them on up to 175 hp and they will stay together and work...there is no comperasion to these two models other than birthday's...

I have had both side by side in my yard to choose from both with 158 loaders. I would use the 4440 to pull the stackmover 10 ton plus stacks, or for tillage, because of more power and wt., it also burns more feul. I would always use the 4040 for loader work feeding cattle or haying including pulling the round baler, because it is so much more menouverable and agile. The 4040 is hard starting when cold must be pluged in. I also would prefer the Quad Range trans. for Baling or Mowing. I like the Powershift for moving stacks, eith trans. is good for loader work.

I would choose the 4440 although it will use more fuel.I own a 4440 and a 4020 i use both mainly for hay work.In my opinion these were two of the best models Deere made. When plowing the 4440 really pays off with the extra weight and power. The difference is worth a lot when working ground if you figure the 4020 and 4040 are fairly close on hp.The 4440 is a great workhorse i would not trade mine for a newer plastic one.I burnt a little over 3 gallon per acre with my 4440 pulling a 5 bottom this fall, but the ground had been in pasture for over 30 years. In my opinon buy the 4440.

I'm from Belgium (Europe). I know 4040 tractors for 30 years. At least he consumes 5.5 gallon per hour.
Has someone experience to reduce consumption by tuning fe the injectors , .... ?
