Deere A High Compression Engine?

I heard something about John Deere making a high compression engine. My son has a 45 handstart A and we can hardly turn it over even with compression releases open. Is there such a thing?

Deere and other aftermarket companies offered lots of different pistons , compression raising inserts, and even power blocks. So it is VERY likely over the years something higher compression = more power has been added , but not off the assembly line.

take a spark plug out and roll engine over by hand if it has the h.c. pistons in it you will be able to see the top of them when they hit t.d.c.

Jdih, you can take the crankcase cover off your tractor and see what pistons you have in your tractor. If you roll over the engine until one of the pistons is at the bottom of it's travel you will be able to see if they are aluminum pistons (which means it has aftermarket aluminum high compression pistons in it) or whether they are John Deere factory gas conversion pistons, which are cast iron. The Deere piston will have a part number on the inside of the skirt area. If they are Deere you can check this part number to see what you have. Hope this helps. Mike

You both need your "Wheaties" for breakfast, then no problem.
The flywheel does not need to spun fast. Properly primed and with a good mag. You can ease the flywheel past tdc, hear the mag impulse click and the engine will start.

with petcocks open air will all bleed out of them & easy to roll over no matter what the compression. go very slow. as stated above it will start if ignition system is up to snuff no matter how slowly u turn it over. the impulse spring in the mag does all the fast work for u. if its a distributor then make sure spark occurs at a couple deg. after tdc.
