4020 engine

What would cause a 4020 to sieze up? The engine has 11,000 hours and has never been rebuilt, so I'm not complaining. But, grandpa was mowing hay with it and noticed it getting hot, put more water in it, and didn't make it another round before she stopped.

Thanks

The question is NOT "why did the engine seize up".

The question is, WHY was it overheating while running a mower, and why did he continue to run it without determining the cause of the overheating, leading to it seizing up???

Hey, never said it overheated, just that it was running hotter than normal, checked the water, it was a little low but it was visibly there, so added what would fit in and went out to try it again.

So, the question remains, what would be a possible cause of a 404 diesel siezing up?

Thanks

Back in the day, It was possible to score a 4020 piston to a cylinder liner with a sudden hard load on a cold engine. But this was more likely to happen with 1000 or 2000 hours, not 11,000.

This is probably crankshaft bearing related. An autopsy is in order.

If the lost water is leaking into the crankcase though a pitted or damaged sleeve, or failed sleeve seals it can cause bearing failure.

Did you pull the dipstick to see of the oil is milky and/or overfull?

If there's water in the oil, it could have lead to bearing failure.

It certainly COULD be a scored piston, siezed in the sleeve, as well. (BT,DT.)

You'll know more when you get the oil pan and cylinder head off.

your first statment said what would cause a 4020 to sieze-up. water low, little hotter than normal. what about a leaking head gasket allowing water to enter cylinder? water isnt compressiable and could cause engine to stop. just my thoughts. good luck. d. coleman

sounds to me like your water went in to the crankcase. leaking o-rings, cavitated through the sleeve, or cracked block. given the little info, i would say o-ring or cavitated sleeve. check the oil level, and look at the head end of the dipstick, if there is a gray gunky substance, that means water in the engine oil. drain the oil, remove the oil pan, and pressurize the cooling system with a radiator pressurizer, and look for the leak.

you may have things in front that plug up the air going in where the fan is when mowning. wash it out. and check your oil if it looks milk or green oil....

Perhaps thermal shock? Cold water hitting over heated metal? Maybe something split?
Or contracted a sleeve smaller and seized onto a hot over sized piston and seized?

Hello,
about the only thing that will lock up a good running motor is a bearing failure. it is possible that it was running hot because the bearing was going bad. a fast check would be drop the engine oil if you find metal then you know what to do. at 11,00 hours it is time for a rebuild anyway.
Good Luck Ed

Put two and two together, that's what you get based on the description. Cold water and a hot engine, especially on expansive/contractive sleeves equals seizure, for sure.
