I"m looking for an inexpensive way to replant buffer strips on my farm. I ran across a 12 foot John Deere Van Brunt drill for sale. It is a trip lever model, has 2 adjusting cranks, rubber tires, has grass seeder, is painted green with John Deere on one box and Van Brunt on the other. Not sure what year or model but it is supposed to have double disc openers (looks to have 16 planting units). The owner wants $495. What"s a fair price to offer? Can you still get parts for something this old? What are the things to watch out for?

I have a question of Glen or anyone who has some knowledge of the FB drills. My father bought two JD Van Brunt drills, one new & one used, similar to what Michael describe. He bought them in the mid-1940's as that was when he started rice farming. Both drills had the fertilizer boxes and large steel wheels. Were the FB drills made at that time, or were these possibly an earlier model? C.L.

Knew I shouldn't have said 1950s without looking it up. Have a 48-49 JD pocket ledger that shows FB drills so they were made in 40s but I'm not sure when they first came out. I haven't seen any FB with large steel wheels or any in manuals but that doesn't mean there wasn't such. On the FB the box is really all one just divided with two lids and the drill size was stenciled on back of box also. Some earlier and other later drills had seperate mounted smaller fertilizer attachment boxes that were mounted on rear or grass seed boxes mounted on front. Had some manuals drug out to answer someone about a SS drill and only found a manual for the JD VB No. 147 Fertilizer attachment box shown to fit B, RB, EE and SS grain drills. It shows a EE and SS drill with fertilizer box and those drills had the tall steel wheels and was stenciled John Deere Van Brunt across back of fertilizer box and also underneath in smaller letters 147 fertilizer attachment for 16x6 EE drill. I thought maybe some B or R models also might have had tall steel wheels? I'll have to scan more pics of old JD drills into implement photos soon.

Probably the FB made in 1950s as those said John Deere and Van Brunt on them while the later FB-A and FB-B only said John Deere on rear of box. That's what it shows in a original OM-M2-335 operators manual anyway. Something to watch out for is worn, broke bad gears and bearings. Disks openers, bearings and shafts can all be found or interchanged from other drills but many of the bearing holders and gears are no longer available from JD. I guess those FB drills bring that kind of price in many areas yet and later DRA and DRB drills still bring $600 - $1000 around here. See if your JD dealer can dig up anything on a FB to help you ID it and you can get a manual and parts catalog for it from JD publications then.

Does the fertilizer box have flat cast iron plates for a bottom & use horizontal spinners? Look along the back for the serial number and model number which is just painted on there like the name. It could be a model FB . I'd have to find my parts CD but it's likely a 1951 to 1954 model. Two years of production used the galvanized box. Most parts can still be had at Mother Deere.

I sold a Van Brundt that sounds similar to the one you describe last summer here in northeast Texas for $450. That seems to be close to the market price. Mine had galvanized boxes and fertilizer hoppers. Check all the discs to see if they turn freely. If it has been pulled down the road many miles with the wheels engaged there may be wear in the gear mechanism.
