I am looking to buy either a John Deere 4430 or a John Deere 4440. The majority of the 4430s I see are considerably less expensive than a 4440s. I what to get everyone's opinion on these tractors to see which tractor is the better value and if any years are worse than others. Please give me your input.

Thank you,
TJH72

The early 4440's used the same rear as a 4430, and under heavy duress couldn't hold up. Both are good tractors though.

4430s had some rearend problems early on when used for heavy tillage, but they should all be repaired if they were to go out by now.I have 2 4430s and they are great tractors, but I sometimes would like the better seat in the 40 series like the 4640 I used to own.4440 is just a bit heavier and a little more powerful than a 4430.Either transmission is very reliable.I have one of each and there are jobs where each have an advantage over the other depending on the job at hand.I especially like the powershift on the auger cart.

The quad range is not the way to go?

You got to be kidding!

He apparently hasn't had to pay for overhauling a power shift yet? The quad range sure beats the crummy excuse the 86 series red tractors had about the same time.

The biggest difference is the motor. The 4430 has the 404 which is a great motor but the 4440 has the 466 which is even better. The powershift is probabilly the most rugged transmissio but Dont be scared to go with a quad range their a great transmision. weve got one with 14,000hr on it and still goin strong. Make sure to check the C range for wear as they have a tendency to pop out when under heavy load like tillage.

In the search box at top of forum enter 4430 vs 4440 and will get about 74 returns on that subject. 4440 is more tractor is why it brings more.

I would prefer the 40,but which ever you get DONOT get the Quad range or partial power shift especially if you intend on doing heavy tillage.Steve

I would have to disagree with the statement about the Quad-Range transmission being bad. I have a 4440 with Quad-Range that has been used almost exclusively for tillage work. No problems whatsoever. Anything mechanical can get torn up by some folks but these transmissions are not inherently weak. Mine has had 180 h.p. run through it ever since I have had it with no ill effects. Mike

You have a 4440 and it has a 6 bolt planetary in it and unless the the 30 has been replaced yhey have a 3 bolt in them,The quad ranges have made me a fair amount of $$The power shift is almost bullet proof.40s had a much heavier rear end in them the same rearend out of a 4430 is a directbolt in to a 4020 btdt.I just hate quad ranges others might like them just my opinion
