I am looking at a 4430. I have heard the comment that 4430"s "have a weak rear end" unless they are "updated". Can anyone explain/describe what the problems are if there are problems? Is it all 30 series tractors? Are the updates costly? Thanks

While disking with my good friend's 4430 that was dualed up with 20.8-38 tires and weighted to pull, the rear end went out while turning. Needless to say I was "mortified". Teardown revealed the differential spider gears gave out and it cost quite a few bucks to repair it with an improved gearset. This happened about 25 years ago.

We've got a 4430 in these parts running a 4630 engine at 200 horsepower. It gets used like a 4640 would or harder, and stays together. I think there were updates way back in the day with the earliest tractors, but seeing as how that was over 30 years ago now, any 4430 that was going to catastrophically fail probably did long ago and were already "updated".

the operators manual gives a guide to the max weight , the ideal slippage and what is the lowest gear to use at full power ,I think it was B1 ,but not sure ,if these reccomendations are followed and the engine is not turned up then any problems are very unlikely

yes there are some problems... and it didnt end in 75

one fix was going from 2 pinion to 4 pinion final drives (then back to 3 on 40series)

bearings during this time gave lots of fits since all companies struggled to get them... they sometimes miss matched races and bearings... that dont work..... they all paid for that

and on quad range trannys --- in hard pulls backwards in mud-- the 2 5/16 bolts (if they were a bit lose from age) can break and drop the top shaft down into the rest of the tranny.

then there is the rear axel bearings... they need attention, grease and watching... just a week spot.

ONE More spot we had problem with... the snap ring that held the planetary's in the rear axle wore a hole in it where the pin runs... let the pin of one planet gear out into the houseing... it did a nice machining job on the houseing...

we have had all of these things happen .. BUT only the bolts breaking we considered really a bad Design problem.. the rest was just "STUFF"

If turned up, weighted down, operated with duals while in lower gears and lugging. Yes that shortens the the drivetrain life of any machine.

Had two 4430's never had a rear end problem altho I did break 2 axels using 8 row equipment. I think they were about the same size axel as the 4020 and couldn't take the weight.

We bought a new 4430 in the fall of 1973. That winter the dealer called and told us to bring it in for a final drive update. All Deere authorized at that time was to swap the planetary -final drive assamblys from one side of the tractor to the other so that the gear teeth would run on the unworn side. We put 4500 Hrs. of hard work through this tractor and never had a major repair. I don't know if the later tractors had heavier parts, but there weren't as many problems on the 75-77 models. The 75 and later models also had right at 125HP as advertised for the 4430, wereas ours made 147 from new. Before I would buy one of these now I would insist on pulling the trans. & hydraulic filter covers and check for excessive filings or iron dust in the filter housings. The Quad- Range tractors were also more troublesome than the Power Shift models.

I think they used wider planetary gears on the update. Mine is a 1974, original, not updated. Over 10800 hours on it, first engine- no OH, burns a pint every 100 hours, since I got it in '80. Cranks 137 hp, pulled 5-18 and 24 foot FC for many years.

I heard that some of the earlier ones had trouble with the planetaries not being big enough, especially in heavy tillage. It was basically 4020 sized parts used in a bigger tractor. The later versions solved this. I am not sure when the changeover was, G-man can nail this right on the head. Anyway, this wasn't as bad as some of the problems other makes had along those lines.
