Hy-Gard is getting more expensive than it used to be.Other stuff may not of went up as much. BUT you can be sure of one thing if you use hy-gard and develope hyd. or brake problems it's a safe bet it was not from the oil. JD is not going to use an inferior oil in stuff they sell with a warranty on it. I bet Wal-Mart could care less if you tear up your tractor.

 I don't know about that in reply to Mike M, 12-18-2005 18:40:43
I don't know about that. I worked for Deere dealers back to the 1960s. I can think of at least two occasions that we had oil related problems with Deere oil - one with Torque-Guard engine oil and one with Deere 303 transmission oil that predated the Hy-Guard. Both times it was discovered that the company that Deere had hired to make oil to their specs. failed to fully comply. We also had a major problem with Quaker-State HDX diesel engine oil. In fact, at the time, there were farm tractors as well as big rigs over-the-road loosing their engines all over the country because of it. It resulted in a major law-suit and Quaker-State lost a pile of money and customers. Since then - I wouldn't use any of their products in anything. I was driving a 1964 SS Chevelle at the time, in which I was also using the HDX oil (because I got it cheap). I almost lost the engine in it when the oil-pressure dropped from 60 PSI to 5 PSI - but I caught it in time. When it happened - I was stumped trying to figure out what was going on. But . . . a few weeks later - we lost several tractor and log-skidder engines, and then the news of the law-suit came out. When Deere had their problems - it was not their fault as I see it. But with Quaker-State? It was their d*mn oil, and when the problems started to occur, they lied about it. So now? Deere still hires outside companies to make oil to their specs. You go to Walmart - and you are still buying oil made to meet those specs. including Deere, Cat., etc. In my mind, I don't see what difference it makes as long as the oil does indeed claim to meet the specifications needed - unless you think they are lying about it and willing to take their chances putting it in print. By the way, Deere used to hire Shell Oil Co. to make most of their lubricants. Today - as I understand it - Shell owns Pennzoil and Quaker-State - so - who the heck knows. Walmart gets their oil made by Warren Oil Co. - and Warren buys their additives the same places as the other big "blenders."

I go though a lot in my backhoe, I have been using the NAPA stuff. It says it exceeds the JD requirements. Its about $10 cheaper than the Hy-Guard for a 5 gal bucket.

Trying to save a few bucks on Hy-Gard is the equivalent of "penny wise, pound foolish". Had a friend who was upset with the price of Deere's Hy-Gard, so he went to Wal-Mart and bought whatever generic brand of hydraulic fluid they had. Put it in his 1020 tractor. Shortly thereafter, he lost the steering, then the brakes, etc. Turns out that the generic stuff ate the paint off the inside of the main case, and plugged EVERYTHING. Cost him a LOT more than the small amount of money he saved buying the cheaper stuff. If you don't like the Deere price, fine, but buy brand-name oil that you trust, not the generic stuff, because you'll end up spending a LOT more than you'll save.

Like the others said there are some good brand name equivalents to use. The cheaper oil does cause more noise and brake chatter on later tractors and more leaks too in my experience. Mixing them can cause more problems. If just for a few antiques you don't use often any oil is going to be better than the dirty crud that was probably in it with water and all. If for a fleet of working machines you can order it for much less per gallon in bulk through JD by the barrel when ordering it early or on dealer booking sales. We were always able to get it from JD dealer for less than other local brand name distributors. If you don't use that kind of volume you aren't saving enough to worry about and just trading some change for quality.

You may have opened a pandora's box posting this question on the John Deere Board. I think it depends on what you use your tractor for. Light duty work you can get away with any generic tractor hydraulic transmission fluid(not R&O). Most oils out there today are better then what an older JD's came with from the factory. I do find that when using generic hydraulic oil the tractor is little noisy when I'm going down the road in high gear on a hot summer day or I'm pulling really hard. I personally like Mystic's brand of oils, priced right and no transmission noise.

John deere oil in the USA is mostly made by Chevron. If you don't mind the price Chevron also has a synthetic oil for this application.

If you stick with one of the major brand names you will be ok. I prefer Chevron, Texaco is owned by Chevron and is the saim oil. Mobil is also good. If you use a cheap fluid the brakes will drive you loony with the chattering.

I wouldn't use Mystic because it is Citgo and citgo is owned by the Venezuela government who is giving us political hassles that have a large part in the increased oil prices.
