My model A runs great at all RPM, except a slow idle. At the idle, i can hear a grinding or some type of noise that seems to be coming from the governor housing. The fan has very little play in it, so i am thinking that the gears driving the fan are ok. Could this be a bearing going bad in the governor? Appreciate any and all thoughts as to what is causing the noise...thanks

i bet it is the bearing on the flywheel side of the gov. you can pull that cover off without disturbing the timing and check the bearing in the cover. i had the same thing happen on my 38 a and 46 b

I read the response from Ben48A... made me think of something that I have questioned about my own '49 A. I hear a "dry rubbing" sound, and I swear it's coming from the distributor cap. My excuse for not investigating is that my tractor starts and runs so well that I don't want to mess with it!

Moral of my story: could the sound you hear be distributor-related?

I have a 48 A and I had that end cover off and the fanshaft off I don't think there are any berings in there except maybe in the fanshaft. I'll check my manuel. But if you take the end cover off make sure you take the mag off before you put the end cover back on. I need a new mag as a result of not taking it off. It pushed out and broke the bottem ear off.

... you have a magneto on a '48 A? I thought the A went to a distributor when JD added electric to the tractor?

Of course, I could be wrong! My wife tells me that a LOT!

The Late A went to distributor ignition as standard equipment but magneto ignition was available as a no-cost option.

... didn't know that!

Is a mag better than a distributor? More reliable, better spark, etc.?

I'm not sure, but I imagine a mag was nice to have when your generator and/or battery was bad.

OOPS! I lied my manuel shows 3 Bearings. 2 on the main shaft and 1 in the crankcase ventliator pump. There is also 1 bearing in the front of the fanshaft. I guess it's been a while since I had that apart.
