I am looking at a 1978 John Deere 2240 Tractor with 175 Loader. It also has 8 forward gears and 4 reverse. Can someone tell me about this tractors operation and reliability, including the operation of the transmission? Any problems that I should be aware Of?

John

I've had mine for about 5 years, (2240/145) handy as a pocket in a shirt. No problems. Be sure to check acidity of coolant or just drain and replace with JD 50/50 as that 3 cyl. has a history of problems of coolant corrosion. Don't know about OH, but I paid $10k for mine up here in ME, sounds like an O.K. price.

John, great little tractor, the only problems I'm aware of is keep the hyd fluid level slightly above full or you can suck air into the brakes causing them to fail. Only a problem when you have a loader on. There were also problems with the early parking brake, make sure it works.

Thanks for the info. I have four 801 series Ford tractors. This could be my first John Deere. This tractor has 1900 hours on it and the asking price is $12,500. I think $10,000 would be more in line for this tractor in Ohio, but like I said I am more familiar with Fords. Any input would be helpful.

I've had a 2440 for a while now, and just bought ANOTHER one. I keep close tabs on the going price of 2240's 2440's and 2640's.

With the (relatively) low hours, that tractor, with a good loader, (and you're getting one there) is easily priced at $12,500 or higher around here.

The XX40, XX50, and XX55 series utilities are hard to come by at a bargain. Expect to pay all they're worth. That's a good solid tractor in most cases.

Listen to what was said about the coolant.... Keep it changed regularly. There are additives available (through Deere or I use a Fram product) to reduce cavitation, and to balance the Ph level of the anti-freeze.

Keep the (internal) clutch throw out bearing greased. There's a small round "knock out" near the clutch pedal that will access that. Failure to do so will significantly shorten clutch life.

DON'T add 90 wt. gear oil to the rear end. (QUICK brake pad failure.... Pad material will stop up hydraulic system.

I'd recommend getting (from Deere) the owners manual, tech service manual, and parts manual. They aren't cheap, but they WILL save you mucho denero over time.

Good luck! You're getting a fine tractor.

Thanks again for all the good comments. I have a couple of other questions. How is the 8 speed forward and 4 speed reverse operated? Also it has sway control blocks and I don't know what they are and what they are used for. This tractor is still at the dealer with the paint being touched up and the mechanicals being checked, so I haven't seen it yet.

Sway blocks attach at side of tranny below pto shaft and inside drag links on three point. They take the place of sway chains and are rotated to accomodate different implements. One direction for some sway like for brush hogging and the other for no sway like for plowing. I like the system, its a little more involoved than chains but the turnbuckle on chain systems always seems to freeze up making them difficult to adjust.

The gears are just like any other tractor, the shifters are located on floor of station between operators legs. Left I,II, and R. On the right is 1st through 4th. Some models have a hi/lo located on the dash to further split these gears. That hi/lo is operated hydraulicaly. Do yourself a big favor and heed buickandeere's advice regarding checking oil, hydraulic fluid and coolant. Dont ask me how I know.
