John Deere 5020 PTO problem

On attempting to engage the PTO on my tractor, hand clutch towards the driver I experience gear crashing as I turn the lever (directly below the steering wheel)towards the engaged position (bevel upwards). On stopping the engine the lever then turn freely but on restarting and moving the hand clutch forward to engage drive the PTO shaft remains stationary. Am I doing something wrong or have I a problem with the gear drive or the PTO clutch. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks for now.

It's all right to disconnect the pto (with the lever between your feet) with the engine running, but I would have the engine off to engage it. All that shifter is for is to save a few hp's when you don't need the pto. The hand lever on your dash should engage the pto without any noise. If it does, then you have problems.

Guess I'm lost here, a 5020 didn't have a hand clutch as I remember. If this is a 520, does it have live pto?
