I need to change the hyd. filter on my wife"s grandfathers 1981 JD 2040 diesel. It has the hyd. pump mounted in front of the radiator. Where is the filter located? I looked on wixfilters.com and they show 1 of 2 different type "canister" style filters fit it. I simply don"t know where it is on the tractor to change it. Help please. Thanks.

Would changing the oil and filter help cure 3ph lift problems?

If the pre-screen and fliter have enough of something in them to restrict oil flow. It's time to stop, look and find out more before going any farther. First of all, what is the filter plugged with?

You are going to need the manual to check other items as well.Such as the clutch free play and how to prevent the clutch from sticking engaged. 1-800-522-7448 The local Deere deale rhas the proper oil and filter on the shelf. The wrong trans lube will ruin the brakes and the high/low shift.

My WIX catalog only shows one filter, WIX #51147. I wonder why you're seeing two choices in the on-line catalog, unless one is for a non-US version of the tractor?

On the Deere parts website, there is a serial number break on the 2040's at #350,000, but the same Deere filter, #AR75603 is listed for BOTH the ealy and late tractors, and that crosses to the WIX #51147.

The filter canister apparently hangs straight downward in the tranmission area, to the rear of the engine clutch housing. Hope this helps!
