Can I use the intake manifold currently on the tractor and pipe the turbo to it. Or do I need a manifold off of a 4320 or 4520. Will I need the 2 piece exhaust manifold? Any info would be appreciated.

What is the intended use of the tractor? It will cost less to trade to a decent 4620 than properly build a 4010 to make and endure that kind of power.

The intended use of the tractor is to restore, and do some farm stock tractorpulling, it will not be used for anything else but runs down the pulling track. Not trying to build a Super Farm Puller, but give it a little more than stock horsepower. Want to put a turbo on it, but don't want to cut up the sheet metal, would like to know what options are available to accomplish this, and the part needed.

You might want to consider replacing the head and rotor in the injection pump with a larger one.Its been a looooong time but I have installed a 5020 head and rotor in a 4010 pump.Seems like there was an even larger one available after I did that.Nobody would be able to tell the difference simply by looking at it whether it was stock or not.

I have a turbo, piping,& manifold I removed from a working first year 4020 tractor 2 years ago. The turbo was greasy, but the tractor still ran. The customer wanted the 4020 restored back to its original state. This 4020 did not have the deeper oil pan, or the modified fan & shroud. Be glad to sell the parts.

A manifold from a 4320 or a 4520 will be too tall without cutting a hole in the hood and adding a bubble in the hood.Been there -done that. The early M&W turbo kits used a different piping system than the later kits and a new hole for the exhaust had to be cut in the hood as the exhaust and intake piping was routed differently. Can't remember, but I think both kits used the same exhaust manifolds.I should remember since I probably installed at least 25 or 30 of those things back in the 60s,starting with 4010s.

If I were wanting to turbo a 4020,I would look for a tractor with a turbo and make the switch if you want to keep your tractor or try to find a used turbo. You might try Mori Sales at Lapel,In..Mori has a lot of "stuff."He may have one.bob

M&W Gear turbo kits used a 1-piece exhaust manifold with a turbo flange, and the factory intake manifold. I believe the tubing/adapter between the turbo outlet and the intake manifold was changed a time or two.

I have a 4020 with an M&W turbo, and a spare M&W exhaust manifold. If it wasn't so darn cold, I'd go out to the shed and dig it up and post a picture!

Is a MW replacement turbo available yet? in reply to Bob, 12-19-2004 17:41:57
I put the turbo from the 4020 on my 4240. Is a turbo available that would have the same mounting as the M&W turbo? I bought the last M&W manifold available from M&W. I was told this one was the last one in stock. Who would make a replacement turbo being that M&W is no longer in the business of building turbo kits?

Take it to a good fuel injection/turbo shop. I just had an M&W rebuilt about a year ago. I belive that Rejay still makes them if you need an entire new turbo.

Have you taken the information from the tag on the turbo itself to a diesel shop to see if they can get rebuild parts, or a replacement turbo.

I'm sure M&W didn't build the turbo, it must be an off-the-shelf unit.

I'll look at my spare tomorrow and see what the tag says.

M&W didn't build their turbos nor did Air Research or Switzer. The name is on the proverbial tip of my tongue but it won't come.I don't think there is a name on the turbo but I could be wrong. It is a short name like Apex or ?It will come to me in the middle of the night.LOL,bob

Think maybe M&W used a Garret turbo after sleeping on it.

kb826 is right that it was a rayjay turbo. problem is you cant get parts and you cant get a new turbo. Theres a conversion now to do a Air Research turbo on the M&W manifold. The biggest problems with the ray jays was they wore the shaft bad and then even if you can rebuild them you will never hold the seals.
