How dificult is it to replace the rear main seal? How do you remove the wear ring from the crankshaft do you need a special tool to reinstall it and the seal? A john deere mechanic told me not to mess with it unless it was really leaking. I am replacing the clutch and pto bearings. The manual I bought is not very helpfull with how to do any of the procedures.

JP, Get the engine ready for seal installation. Then call your local Deere store, have them come out on a service call to do install of seal. What could it cost?? It only takes 10 minutes at the most to install that seal with the proper tool..Mileage plus an hour minimum labor..

Your JD mechanick is right. If it did not leak do not change it. I changed mine 2 years ago and it had not leaked in The 28 years that I had owned it. With in 6 months after replacing it with the new type seal it began to leak.

Unless Deere has recently change the design, it takes a special tool to install the seal.A dealer will be the only one that has the tool.Maybe you could borrow one.I have always used a chisel and hammer to lightly stretch the wear ring and then used a crows foot to pry it off.Tap the chisel in several places around the diameter of the crank.Be sure to not damage the crankshaft. Its very easy to do.Deere says it is very important to leave the new wear ring inside the seal when installing it.The seal and the wear ring are pressed onto the crankshaft together as a unit with the special tool.I,too, would replace the seal while the tractor is split if it hasn't been replaced for a while. If the ring doesn't have any sealant on the inside,I would give it a VERY light coat of Permatex.

Thanks for your information I will give it a try I was wondering how important it is to keep the seal and wear ring together for installation. I thought I would install the wear ring then the seal. I will see if I can borrow a tool and keep them both together. Thanks again
