I have purchased a John Deere B tractor to restore for my father in law. The medal tag on the tractor only says:
Model B Tractor
Serial No. 8
Patents Applied For

There is nothing else on the tag. I would like to know what year the tractor is.

The John Deere has an angle iron frame (open under the lower water pipe). It has a big cap on radiator.

Hey doc,
In regards to your reply, the tractor is styled and the tag is steel. Where else on the tractor will I find another tag or some more numbers?

Styled and a steel tag. That would be the war years. Late 42 to the end of 44. Is the front frame cast iron (has a cast belly under the water pipe) or an angle iron frame (open under the lower water pipe)? Radiator have a big cap? Or a small presure cap on, like a car?

Will,

Thanks for clearing up what a cast iron frame means (with the cast belly under the water pipe) for me. I must have been the only guy around who didn't know, and I sure wasn't going to ask a dumb question.

Best regards,

Stan

Stan, there is no dumb questions. Just stupid answers. If I don't know, I will ask too. I am only 33 and have been in this for only 5 years. Still have lots to learn. And probably many more questions.

Will - I agree with the "no dumb questions, only stupid answers" comment.

The thing I like best about your posts on the board is that they are complete and answer the question in total. For example, if someone asks where to find an item, you will answer with the name, phone number, website, etc., not just the name.

I appreciate that trait in someone half my age - LOL.

Keep up the good work.

Stan

It's quite possible that what you're seeing as an "8" is really a B - at least that's the way my '41 model B serial number starts.

I agree with Doc's post - we need some more info to help you ID the tractor.

The first model B had a serial number of at least 1000, so it is safe to say that the tag your looking at is either illegible, or just needs to be cleaned up a bit to read the other numbers. Depending on the type of B you have, either an unstyled B (exposed radiator) or a styled B (front grilles enclosing the front end), there should be anywhere from 4 to 6 numbers. Check some more and get back to us. It is possible that you may not be able to read the rest of the numbers too. Also, it may help to know what kind of metal the tag is, it could be brass, aluminum, or steel. Some of the steel tags are a bear to figure out because they rusted so bad. Hope this helps.
