I have a New Holland 273 hayliner bailer that is breaking both needles. Everything is in time and and I don"t see any binding @ the needle support bar when bailer is turned over by hand. I am really puzzled by this as I have never had this trouble before. I even had a tech from my local New Holland dealer come look @ it, put new needles on and adjust everything and it broke them again. He says he don"t know what is causing them to break. Good bailer repairmen are hard to come by anymore. Thank"s in advance for any input or info anybody might have.

Plunger head stop in reply to Troubled, 05-27-2005 14:36:33
Troubled,if plunger head stop is working correctly there should be no way a needle is broken by plungerhead except if pin that holds plunger arm to plungerhead has partially come loose protruding into slot or if slots in plungerhead that needles go up thru are blocked by foreign object.Tx Jim

Will add that if needle brake is not holding that may cause a problem and won't show up when running it by hand. The plunger safety stop needs to be set so that if the needles do drop the plunger will be stopped before hitting them. On my 282 the lift arm has some slack, the needle lift is set as a distance from the left frame to the bottom of the bale case, if I adjust it per the book my needles would get hit every time, I have to back off on that adjustment.

Plunger/needle timing is off or needle adjustment is off. Needle latch may be maladjusted or siezed. Be sure that needle to plunger timing is checked with the knotter in 'Home' position. In fact, start out by verifying that the home position is correct.
