Looking for info on a Hesston 5800 Round Baler. Were they any good? How small or big of a bale will it make? How much HP to run it? I have a small hobby farm and maybe bale 1500 small square bales a year but the kids are gone and I need to look at my options. Would a Case 400 Diesel with a loader run the baler and pick up the bales. I found one that has been in a shed and looks to be in pretty good shape for it"s age. Guy wants $1500 for it. Thanks in advance, DJT

If the belts are worn you will have hay going everywhere you don"t want it. That is if you can get it to go between the press rollers to start with. Vermeer Fs and newer are the best.

The baler of choice in my neck of the woods is the 530 or later Deere.

I have a 5580 for sale in N. Texas. It has 3 springs and rolls a 2000# 5x6 bale....if you run it full; can stop rolling any time you want to make a 5x5 or whatever suits you.

If you run any big baler full, you will need the PTO hp to spin the roll. IF you bale 5x5's with a 5x6 baler you can do it with 50 hp. Don't know the hp of your 400.

I run with a 4010 JD which is around 75 hp. It loafs till I get over 5' dia. Then you can feel the governor kicking in as the roll gets to the full 6' which I normally don't do; just wanted to show my neighbors that it'll do it if you wanted it to.

Besides, running a full dia. bale is just hard on everything so why do it. If you are doing custom baling, you can knock a buck off the price of rolling and put money in your pocket for the repairs that you don't have to do (plus the down time that doesn't occur). The discount will help you compete with those that run their equip. to the limit.

My 2c

Hi DJT,

They've always told me that Hesston is the Cadillac of hay equipment.

Prices range from $1500 to $4000. Also, one guy says 4x5 bale and the next claims 5x6.

You might be crowdin' it a little with askin' that 400 to tug 'er.

Dunno, hook on and see, I guess

I got a 5500, and it will make up to a 5x5 bale. Dam good baler, real eeasy to run, and it runs cheap. Gave $2200 for mine and pulled it the first year with my M4700 Kubota which is only 42 pto hp, when the bale got over 4' it was barkin pretty good but it would still make a 5'er, she would just talk a little harder. I am now going to run this baler with a 1955 oliver which is 108 pto hp which is overkill but oh well. Don't know about a 5800, but my 5500 is a good rig.
