Anyone have the recipe for getting rid of broom straw growing in my Bahia grass pasture? 2,4D seems to kill the broadleaf weeds. Is there an herbicide that targets broom staw without killing the Bahia?

In my experience, broomstraw likes acid soils, so the remedy is to lime the fields and fertilize well. I don"t know of a broomstraw specific herbicide, however. In my area(upper SC) the volunteer Bahia grass seems to choke out broomstraw and Bermuda grass, which makes me wonder how hard it would be to get rid of Bahia if necessary. Cows love to graze Bahia and it makes good hay. However, here it does not yield as much as Bermuda or fescue. It is also tough to cut with the disc mower. Any comments in reply about Bahia would be welcome as I have considered planting some. KEH

Hay producers in Central Texas hate bahia in their coastal/tifton patches. Spray it with 'Ally'. Does a good job controlling it, but like everything else that works, it ain't cheap.

Hey cannonball,

Do ya'll have wild rye grass messin' up your first hay cuttings? We sure do. Not much you can do legally, but some sneak atrazine on their patches in December and it works like a charm.
