has any one had any experience with using the cutting drum out of a silage chopper to make an ultra duty wood chipper. i have looked at commercial wood chippers but i think i would be better off building my own for the money involved and for how heavy i want the chipper to be. if anyone has any input i would appreciate it

We use an old Fox 546, had it out this weekend as a matter of fact. Works really good and will swallow atleast 5" diameter branches. We've put whole xmas trees through it in the past. We use a newer Fox 3000 for filling the silo.

Hi, I have accidentaly chopped a small tree branch that had blown into the corn row.
Once my Dad had one of the bolts holding a cutter head knife on break and I remember seeing the end result. It bent the knife in ___| shape and sliced the drum in two pieces until it crashed into the shear bar and jambed the cutter head.

BE CAREFUL these machines were designed to chop silage not tree branches.

The newer choppers with shearbars and cutterdrums actually don"t make good chippers. The conversions done here have all been old big-knife flywheel-type cutters like my Papec 151D or the JD #8 and #12. My Papec was bound to either be converted into a chipper or scrapped outright but I decided it was just in too good of shape for that so I bid on it and got it and some parts for $12, and it will continue to do what it was designed to do, chop corn to fill a silo.

Neighbour here took an old Gehl and just built a box on the front to feed brush into. Nothing else changed, seems to work really well.
