Picked up a 4 bar JD 894 yesterday. The disk on the ends have the holes to make it a five bar by moving 3 and adding the fifth. Would it improve preformance enough to be worth the effort? Haven't used this style rake before. It's to be used on orch grass, clover, and alfalfa.

had a 3 bar JD rake and now have my dads 4 bar JD. Dont see or remember the 3 bar missing anything. Here in Okla, watching people use these new LONG modern rakes, I sure see alot of hay tufts left in the field. If my Steel wheeled JD had left a field like that, Ida junked it. I guess its because of slight sunken spots in the field that these long rakes glide over and miss. Guess this new generation of rake useres will accept it and go on

In alfalfa and fall grass hay you'll miss the 5th bar if you dont add it. Also, 4 bar rakes are much less forgiving with missing teeth.

I think that if your hay is real thin the five bar would help. The J D adds at the time they were built said that with four bars, the iron hit the hay less times.
