Before this haying season starts I want to put together a tandem rake hitch and I know where one IH 35 side delivery rake is that might be for sale. Is there anything to look for on these rakes, we haven't had a side delivery rake for 30 years but I think we can buy a pair of side delivery rakes and build the hitch for less than a new 9 wheel inline rake. I am not interested in New Holland rakes even though I know they make great hay equipment, they have closed down a couple of the dealers around here and if they don't want to give us a dealer I'm not going to drive an hour to do business with them.

How will IH help with your dealer concern?
Case-IH-New Holland are all one big happy corporation now. It seems like you need Deere or a wheel rake if you don't want "CNH" which is Case New Holland, with IH presence & service implied.

Frank, CIH and NH still maintain seperate dealerships even though they are one company. We have 3 CIH dealerships within 30 miles of us and one of them will deliver parts to us. I don't think any of those dealers carry NH parts other than for the brand new stuff that would be the same as the CIH equipment.

I have two, but I have never used a double hitch. The bearings on the tooth bars may go bad or the rubber washer between the bar and bearing. New bearings are about $35 each. Also the connection that holds the bar assembly to the frame can become enlarged allowing for more free movement of the whole bar assembly. This usually occurs on the side that holds most weight of the bar assembly, or the left side as you stand behind the rake. I find them to be good rakes. I have never seen a good one bring over $1000 compared to NH 256 which seen never to go under $1250 for a good one.

My few years experience with IHC 35 rakes wasn't good. Gear box-transvers shaft and two different gears-have failed and repair parts are hard to locate and are expensive. I've laid mine up do to lack of gear availability. Dick Davis

Cliff,
Here is the one that a neighbor and I built last year. Works great. Built using an old combine axle to steer the rear both ways so it will make one big windrow and if you are in thin grass you can keep rolling till you get a big enough windrow or if you are in heavy grass then you swing it the other way and it makes two seperate windrows

Jerry, that is almost identical to the one I was planning on building but I was going to attach the rear hitch to the tractor 3pt, after seeing yours though I think going to the tractor drawbar would be easier. Do you have enough clearance under the combine axle for big windrows to feed through? Is that 4" square tubing you used for the hitch and also how long did you make it for clearance around the front rake?

Jerry:

Do you have blueprints or a drawing of your tandem hitch? I'd like to build one for use on our farm here in Iowa, but I don't know of one here that I can use as a pattern.

I think you would like to try the inline wheel rake first. I have went to them and like them way better than the old bar rakes. Way less shatter, and they clean the ground much better if you set them right. Just my 2 cents
