I have about 35 acres of flat open fields. The past to years my dad and I have mowed the fields with an Agri-Fab motorized pull behind brush hog. The fields are nice grass with no bushes etc. However in some spots the fields are rough. I have been looking to buy a 5-6 foot pull behind brush hog for my tractor but before I do I would like to know how well they work? Any help is appreciated.

I have both a pull type and a mounted. Both work good. one thing on the mounted---make sure you double nut your hitch bolts, stay away from 'quik-clips'...you could get in a real mess if one side of the mounted gets loose. Be Careful.

When I was given my '45 JD "A", I was also given a 6' FMC pull behind brush hog. I like it just fine. The drawbacks that others have mentioned (backing, etc.) are there, to be sure, and the extra length of a fairly long tractor (mine has a tricycle front)with the mower means I have to "plan ahead" when turning, but mowing is not a problem.

Pull behind brush hog is BY FAR your best choice. You can definitely make better time with the pull type. Any turning with a 3-pt mower has the mower moving a bit sideways - they just don't cut well sideways! I've used both types a lot - own both types; the 3-pointers don't get taken to the big jobs. Cut 60 acres of pasture every year-steep, rough, odd shaped, banks, etc. Always take the pull-behind that day!

They are ok but if you have 3 point they are even better.

I do not have a 3-point. I don't know what all the rage is about 3-point hitches. I personally do not like them. They cause me more trouble than they are worth.

Used both - both do good job when properly adjusted. Trailer type is somewhat less manuverable, but if you're thinking ahead, you'll get along fine. Last year, son and I worked on the same field, I had a 3pointer, he had a trailer type. Couldn't tell the difference when we got through.

Pull behinds are near inpossible to back up with. That being said, I like using my pull behind for field mowing, less weight on the tractor. Pull behinds are usually further behind the tractor, so there is more potential of stuff getting thrown back at you. I have chain guards to keep this to a minimum.

I used a belly mounted one a farmall cub. It worked good but it was a pain to put on the tractor.
