Real simple; New Holland 55-56-256. Thet work well, parts are easy to get, and they aren't too expensive. Usually, anything that stays around as long as this "design", must be good stuff. I have a 56, and would like to find another one. (we have two farms, about 50 miles apart)

I need to rebuild the gearbox and would like to find a location to buy the parts or better yet a rebuild kit for my New Holland 55 hay rake

Here is a previous post I had made about my opinion of the wheel rake verses the Rolabar rakes. I have both and use both but they have different characteristics that you need to decide which fits your needs and budget the best

I can't believe more are not using the rotary type rakes that are made by kuhn, miller pro, and pequea. I've used bar, wheel and rotary type rakes and (in my opinion) the rotary is best hands down. It will handle any amount of hay, makes a nice tall windrow, doesn't twist the hay up so the air flows through it, the hay dries faster, you can rake at any speed, you can control the speed of the rake with the speed of the pto. If you ever have the chance borrow or rent one of these for a day.

I've wondered about those. Do they work well in alfalfa, or do they knock the leaves off?

To the original poster: In my opinion, if one has to skimp somewhere in buying hay wquipment, skimp on the rake. I just round baled behind a guy with a 3-bar IHC 4-steel wheeled rake, and one of the bars was 1/2 missing so it was really a 2.5 bar! He bought it for $5. Now, I sure would hate to mess around with such a thing, but for 10 round bales, it actually raked up the hay just fine.

The best rake today (locally) is the 5-bar Rollabar 256 New Holland. JD has an equally good one, sorry don't know the numbers. The NH is around $4000 new.

As Kelley said below, the NH 56 is the same rake, same parts fit on it. They tend to run $400-800 locally. A best bang for the buck.

A NH 55 is also the same rake, but does not offset the rear wheel, so it won't follow the ground maybe quite as well. Real good machine for $300-400.

Other roll-abar rakes on 2 rubber wheels go for $150-300, and will make you a few acres of hay.

The wheel rakes are handy, can pull more dirt into your hay, don't turn as well or make corners. But are pretty good, get the job done.

I have a NH 55, and am looking for a 3-pt wheel rake to complement it. I rake a few acres of hay, alfalfa, cornstalks, and weeds each year, and want a backup/ versitility of both types.

They work nice in alfalfa, because you can slow the pto speed down. It just sweeps the hay over to the curtian and leaves it in a perfect wind row evey time.

What works for me is a Miller Pro 1150 rotary rake. I used a 55 new holland for many years & had trouble getting thick hay to dry & sure hated baling knotted up rolls. I used to go through a lot of shear pins making 1st crop marsh hay because of the slugs the 55 left & so far this year i have sheared 1 pin in 5000+ bales marsh hay. It cost me $5000 3 years ago but I wouldn't go back to the 55. I used the wheel rakes also but they are rock rakes & hay buyers don't like rocks in the bales.

Gotta disagree with you on this one, Paul. In my experience, the windrow makes the bale. If the windrow is too skimpy or big the baler won't perform properly. I use a pair of IH 35's that I rebuilt and can make some nice windrows. We just baled for a neighbor that raked with a 12 wheel V-rake and it was a chore. Too many slugs and the windrow was way to big so we had to drive over the field a couple of times to get all of the hay.

I am intrigues by the rotary rakes and plan to examine them this winter.

Penn State did studies on the differences between the 2 styles (wheel vs. bar). ease of use, hay damage, hay pickup ect. not sure where to tell you to find that info. though... As the others have said both have pro's/con's there are some smaller wheel rakes (not V) that work for smaller farm applications. I know NewIdea used to make one (20-30years ago) as well as others. If your chopping hay for the silo I would stay with the bar as the wheels will pickup rocks (if you have them). Balers are more forgiving with rocks than the chopper.

For my two cents, I'd say neither. I have 3pt Kuhn rake. I love it. It rakes really well, picks up the hay into nice tall windrows without the rolling/wrapping effect. Additional,I have a couple smaller odd shaped fields that are not square, so it's nice to be able to pick up and turn around at the end. My father has NH 55 and it's a good rake, but not as handy as the Kuhn. I have two neighbors that had wheel rakes, one loved it ( a towed model) and one hated it ( a 3pt model)

How much hay are you raking? If you have a small operation the used NH roll bar rakes are the best. If you have a medium operation I would look at the V wheel rakes about half the price of a new roll bar rake. If you are large and want to do it right get a double basket rake. Vermeer makes a real nice hyd. driven one. You can check them out at www.vermeerag.com

Unless, you have large square fields the wheel rake won't work to well for you, however they will rake as clean as you can get! New Holland 56 or 256 will be your best bet.

I had a wheel rake, really though using a v rake would be big stuff. I needed to speed up raking, it was my hold up operation. Sure learned a lot. Used it 3 days, parked it and sold it the next spring. I had a new 256 that I used for square bailing went back to using it. After 2 years I bought a NH 56 this year and made a hitch so I can pull the 56 and the 256 in tandem. That gives me double the raking swath if I want it of the V rake. Cost was very affordable. I needed a good bar rake to sqauare bale behind, found the v rake picked up too much dirt, and made too big a windrow for the square baler on first cutting grass. V rake balls up in good hay to fit a windrow for a 4' pickup on a round baler. Got the 56 for $500, built a dolly wheel set and hitch for $125. Paid $3800 for the new 256. Guy that bought my old v rake loves it but he just puts up 30 acres of grass hay and doesnt fertilize.

As mentioned, if doing a small amount of hay the bar rake will work well. I however have a bar rake as well as a 10 wheel V-rake. I use the V-rake for all my round bale hay. I pull 3 nine foot swaths into a windrow on one pass across the field. I use my bar rake for square bales as the V-rake makes a windrow to wide to pick up with the square baler. I bale about 1,000 round bales a year, and wouldn't even consider being with out a V-rake ever again. You can get some good buys this time of year. Was just at an auction today and say a V-rake that was like new sell for $1600. Around here a decent bar rake usually runs $1000.00 or more.

Thats a easy one.
Unless you are doing a vast amount of hay, where you would need to pull 2 or 3 swaths together at a time.
A good used New Holland 55, 56 or 256 would be your best bet. A 56 would possably give you the most bang for the buck.
New Holland still sells the 256 new if you like.
But why when a 50 year old NH 55 works just as good.
