toplink question

I picked up a Ferguson/Detroit Harvester sickle that came with out the top link. From the pictures I've seen, the top link looks like the same one that came on my Ferguson one bottom plow, except for the adjusting rack bolted near the top end of the sickle link. My question, is the sickle top link the same length as the plow top link? I could make an adjusting rack to hook the chain to if the plow link will work. Thanks, Mike

Top links are a common item and are not specific to a particular implement. Buy an adjustable top link. They are available at hardware stores that have an agricultural department or focus. I picked one up recently for $45.00 Canadian.

The turn buckle type WILL NOT WORK with that implement. It has to be orignal factory flat bar type with bolt holes for asjustment. Those same holes are where the rack mounts, 1 piece on each side. And that top link was standard on both the Ford and Ferguson tractors. You will not find any new ones tho, have to find at like a tractor parts beet or if lucky find one at a old farm auction. But the link is same for all implements, for some you have to us different bolt holes to lenghton.

I was not thinking. Different numbers of that mower use a different top link and the one will not interchange with the other. We need the model number off the tag on the mower to tell the model you have. And I an getting ready to scrap some of both models. The one that uses the standard flat top link was painted both the Ford Red and Ferguson grey. The one that uses the other top link was only made in the Dearborn version and it is propritary only to that model. You need a special bracket that the top link mounts to and extensions for the lift rods on the 3 point. That other top link is shorter and non adjustable.

David and John. The top link he is taking about is NOT the common turn buckle type. It is two flat bars bolted together and a rack/tooth bar on the one end. This rack is were you adjust the chain that lifts the sickle bar. Look in the picture close. The chain is not hooked in this picture but you can get the idea behind the deal.

IMHO the chain in the photo limits how low the 3 pt hitch will travel down or lower limit. The center link in photo is referred to as having a "rooster comb" for chain hoop adjustment for different 3 pt lowering heights

Never heard the rooster comb on that but you have the rest correct. That mower in the picture is the model that were built for both Dearborn and Ferguson and is the older version, the newer uses a different style and size flat link that is not adjustable and I have that one on a mower that I am getting ready to scrap. Fits nothing else so not apt to be stolen or taken off to use on something else.

Some implements, like a sickle mower, are often suspended so they do not drag on the ground very heavy.

They typically have a specialized top link that has an adjustable triangle suspension setup with perhaps a spring to allow the mower to float on the chain/ rod/ bar and spring.

Often a generic top link will fit to carry the mower around,, but the mower won?t operate very well without that extra fancy suspension setup.

I think I still have a top link like that laying around in the machine shed. I have not used it in years since I sold the machine it was on

Rooster comb center link was what they were referred to when I sold mowers for a dealer back in the 60's-80's for tractors such as 9N/2N/8N that 3 pt hitch tended to drift down while mowing. Servis/Rhino equip had a center link with an adjustable block controlled by a set screw in one end for altering cutting heights on the frt of rotary mower.

The mower in the picture is the type that uses the standard orignal Ford or Ferguson flat top link and is the older model like I was thinking about in my first post. I have 3 of those mowers headed to scrap yard.

No, not usuable except for parts. Back when I got them and for $5 up When I was in good health and times were good I was going to fix up enough for show one painted in Dearborn colors with Dearborn tag, Other in Ferguson Colors with Ferguson tag. Never got to it Might be able to make one usuable out of all of them. And I am in northwest Ohio.
