How to Press New Yoke onto PTO Tube?

What is the secret for pressing a new PTO Yoke onto a PTO Outer Tube? I am building the tractor end of a pto shaft for my recently purchased Land Pride Rotary Cutter to replace the missing one. Shaft is Eurocardan Series 6 and the tractor end is the outer tube. I filed the outer edge of the tube end to remove any burs and put on a slight chamfer. The yoke is in the proper orientation, but I still can't get it started. All parts are new.

They usually will slide together and are held with a roll pin. Are you sure that you do not have the wrong yoke??? The shape is the same for both ends but one is smaller.

Thanks for the reply. I had a sales person assist me - I emailed them the specs and P/Ns from the Land pride Parts List (also on line) and he confirmed back to me with P/N, description and my cost. P/N on the part matches the parts list and description. Is real loose on the inner tube. I'll check again.

Thanks!

Bob

So is there a best way to force it on? I tried using a piece of oak to beat on - fit into the yoke so I wouldn't damage the parts where the caps go.

I had the same trouble. The new outer is just a little bigger than the original. I just cut off 4" of smaller one. Drilled hole. Then stuck new one over it. I welded the new one to yoke.

I couldn"t get mine on either. Built a vertical press on a piece of square tube using a bottle jack. Worked good.

Thanks to all for the ideas. Took it to work today and we removed the paint from the inside of the yoke, added a bit of heat from the "Gas Wrench", and it went on with a few well placed taps. It was definitely a tight fit!!!

I have used a solid shaft cradled on two jackstands with the yoke ears set over it and the new shaft sticking straight up from the yoke. Persuade the shaft into the yoke with a BFH and block. With this method it is prudent to cut the shaft to length after installation in the yoke in case the outer end of the shaft material is deformed during installation. You can use similar methods and a hydraulic press if your shaft tube is short enough to fit the press.
