Trying to bale short 2nd cutting grass. Its not wanting to get it rolling. Belts have good grip. Is there some modification to the square roller that will help? Is this a common problem for this baler which is the same as a Hesston 530. Thanks

I have that baler and maintain a couple of others. They come with a bar that extends across the chamber, just above and behind the square roller. It is there to help start a roll in short hay. Most of them have been removed because they can contribute to a clog in long hay. They are held in by two bolts on each side. Does your baler have the bar installed?

Thanks for the tip Garry. I will check when I go there on Monday. On this baler . When standing at the back , the rough side of the belts should be facing out, right?

Short hay, or very dry hay will give you trouble. I get the best results after waiting till late afternoon when the hottest part of the day is done , just before the dew sets in. I put 1200-1600 bales through two of these balers each year. pull ahead slowly until it starts spinning. If you crowd it, it will plug. This baler does like new belts after 4000 bales or so. I have found that the ruff side of the belts gets worn down and they don't grab as well. The belts need to be as tight as a guitar string to do well also. On a long day of baling I can tell how the hay is drying out. It will bale great in the early part of the day and not so good at the late pm. Buy early evening though it is baling great again. The cut off for the string also will give some grief if it is too dry. 20 plus years running this baler and you start to learn the tricks. Al

That is correct on the rough side of the belts facing out. Al Baker has it right. I start every bale at a slower rpm and wait until the roll is spinning to increase rpm. I have also heard of some people running beads of weld on the surface of the square roller to increase friction, but have never wanted to try that myself.

The 5540 model has a square roller and they bolted a piece of channel on it. Any idea what that piece that mine is missing cost>
