New Holland 846 Baler Opinions

Hello. Just wondering about the good and bad points for a NH 846 baler. What size of bale does it make? I"m not too familiar with a chain round baler...how easy does it start bales? I"ve heard some of the older round balers were troublesome for getting a bale started in the chamber. I"m looking for something to do excess hay that I don"t put into small squares.

Have an 855 chain baler and it will eat anything. Have never had a problem starting a bale in wet or dry stuff.

Got a 845 New Holland. Simple baler that will bale anything except very dry straw. Wait for a dew and it will bale it just fine also. Must be a 5 x 5 bale.....

My 845 is automatic. Stop sign comes out and two needles drop and wrap the twine on the bale. When the stop sign returns to home it is wrapped. Shut the baler off an raise the door and engage baler to eject bale.

I had an 847 for awhile it was a good baler made about a 4.5 X 4.5 bale.Sold it because everything I have is set up for the larger bales the 851 make. When it gets to the STOP indicator
you need to stop then don't try to push it that's where a lot of people have trouble with the chain balers trying to make too big of a bale.

Some had manual tie, some automatic, some hydraulic. All depends on how its set up. Good balers, we wore two 846's and an 847 out back in the late 70s early 80's. Literally wore out, all the way through the sheet metal.

Thanks. What are the major wear points to look for on an 846? Such as main chain or floor chains...what wears on them and breaks first?
