Single Acting Cylinder used as a Double Acting

Just wondering, can you take the vent out of a Rowse mower lift cylinder, attach another hose and make it into a double acting cylinder?

My motivation for this is that my tractor, a International 404,does not have a single acting control valve with float detent. but it does have an open bank to connect the hose too. My local Case Dealership says it would cost up the $300 dollars to convert and may affect my loader.

What type implement are you attempting to operate? If single acting cylinder won't extend with engine running stop engine extend cylinder then start engine & proceed.

A true single acting cylinder cannot be converted to a double for more then one reason
#1 it will only have one place to hook a hose to if it is a true single acting cylinder.
#2 the seals will not be made to handle pressure both ways

Sounds like you already have a double acting cylinder but it is being used as a single which you can do by way of a vent but as I said a single is just that and there is no way to use it any other way

As mentioned, a true single acting cel won't work as a double acting in any way shape or form.

If it is a real double acting cyl with a vent on the one side, you can certainly hook it up as double acting; but that often creates more problems
than it solves, as it was supposed to float in one direction, now your machine will be rigid in both directions and won't likely operate well any
more, or bust.
