JD planter plate # B27436 for pumpkins question

I usually have my pumpkins by June 15th which already past. I know there is a planter plate from John Deere (part #B27436) for pumpkins available at $55.00 each. I intend to use my JD 290 planter set in 38 inch rows only using one row at time for row width spacing per the seed vendor(4 to 6 feet). The seed spacing in the row is pretty much similar. I believe I will need to set the gearbox on the lowest speed setting (#2) to achieve the spacing(s) I'm looking for. My preference would be to to find 2 used finger pickup units and remove every other finger on each unit for my JD 7000 4 row 38 inch planter which I have not had any success at this time. There is a video on YouTube from a Royal Oaks Farms that explains how they plant pumpkins. Has anyone used this B27436 planter plate and would share their recommendations and/or experience? Typically I plant pumpkins by hand and it is time and labor comsuming. My pumpkin patch is approximately 250 feet long by 50 feet wide. Any assistance is always appreciated.

trial and error....

Set the planter up with no fertilizer, plant some seed in the drive way, about 25 feet or so. Get off the tractor and measure the distance between the seeds. Adjust if needed.

I have a B27436 plate that I've used in my #71 planter. Note that this plate has very large cells and with the seed size I had it planted a lot of doubles and even triples. Pumpkin seed can vary greatly in size so you probably will want to measure your seed first to determine if it will work. If you need the cell dimensions let me know and I'll measure my plate for you.

Also be aware that this plate MUST be used with a Y2630B filler plate when used with a regular corn hopper bottom. The seed plate catalog also mentions it should be used with a special light-force cutoff spring to reduce seed cracking but I used the normal spring and didn't notice any ill effects.

My son plants about an acre of pumpkins for his kids" college money, using a 494. He took all the seed boxes off, and has 2 kids walk along side, each planting one row...by dropping a seed into the exposed tube. A chalk mark on the tire tells them when to drop the seed!
