IHC #21 MOUNTED MOWER ADJUSTMETS???

I am now considering umpacking my A/C 21 mower with 6
foot cutter bar. BUT! I need some help in making
abjustments to the hold downs of the knife. I know it was
not in proper hold down adjustment when I disassembed and
paced it away 20 some years ago. SO!! How does one go
about setting the poper knife clearences, so that the
knife will shear properly?
Thank you for all your input help.

Be it right wrong or some where between all I have even done was take a hammer and hit the hold downs to bend them down to the point they are just touching the bar and holding the section down on the guards. Been doing it that way since 1980 on many mowers I have worked on

So as I read what both of you hae witten there is, as apears to me, no exacting science so to speak, such as placing a secton under the hold down plus a feeler gage to test each individual hold down insuring each is equal to start out with, near fatory settings???
I'm astounded!

something else to look for ........

as you mow, and hit a rock that the cutterbar bounces over,
often the guard which hit the rock will be bent up a little.
This lifts the whole knife off the adjacent guards.

So keep an eye that your guards are lined up - a BH is useful here.

Well it isn't a rocket. LOL You just tap on them till they are close and that is it. I have had bars where the hold down had rubbed the section it rode on shiny you just want to make sure they hold the bar down tight enough that the section sit right down on the guards

Thank you to each of you. As I have said this mower has been stored in pieces for over 20 years and now I am going to re assemle. I an very suprised at the condition of the bearings, no glitches smooth as silk as the saying goes still has oil in the sump. So wish me the best as I start in to set this mower to functioning.
Thank you again .

Over the many years I have messed with stuff I have built 2 or 3 sickle bar mower form junk ones. Built a belly mount one for a Farmall B and used a power steering pump for the hyds on it. A couple years ago I took a JD #9 that was missing a good number of parts and used what parts I had laying around to make it work again. Pain t put on. Let a friend use it and he broke it in less then 48 hours
