No- till drill vs No-till planter

I have been conventional farming 90ac for 20 years had to take a new job keeps me away from the farm 10 hours a day Monday through Friday. So I am thinking about going no till so my question would be no till drill or no till planter whats everybody?s thoughts. I plant corn , beans and sometimes I plant wheat . Can I guy plant wheat with a planter would be my other question?

For me I would start with a planter. Works for corn and split the rows for beans or wheat. Then as money frees up get a drill to go with it. Splitting the rows can be aggravating and time consuming but it works. Just my thoughts

Can't beat an old IH 800 for no till work. Good set of trash whippers and coulter and you are good to go. You can always split row the beans. Cut the rate in half and drive it twice. Or just plant the beans in 30" rows. As for a drill, most any coulter cart drill will do just fine. I'd start with the planter and go from there. Doubt you would want to plant wheat with one though. Even splitting to get 15" probably wouldn't work.

See if your county Soil Conservation District has a unit they rent out and try before you buy.

I have seen wheat planted with a plateless planter but did not like what I saw in that the rows were 15" apart and normal wheat is in either 7 or 8" rows. Too much bare ground for weed groth and loss of wheat plants.

I have been no till since around 04 or 05 on beans and on corn since 07 or 08, my 2 cents on it is having 2 different tools for the job. I have a JD 7000 set up for no till and I have been using a crust buster 3800 drill for beans and you can plant wheat with the drill also. the drill has a coulter cart and does a good job the draw back is planting in corn stubble, I find a lot of beans on top. next year I am planning on buy a split row planter for bean but keeping the drill for wheat.
