New Holland 268 Question

My NH 268 is baling some short bales (1-2 ft long) every so often. Most bales are normal but it's getting progressively worse. I think I've narrowed it down to the trip-arm friction disc (part# 41521).

I don't have a dealer nearby, and if I order one, it won't be in before I have to bale my hay. Is there something I can do to temporarily fix this so I won't get a load of pony bales? I have one ordered, but it won't be here for about 5 days.

I've seen a lot of balers that have been "farmerized" by adding a spring to the friction arm to hold it tighter against the wheel.

Take a die grinder or hack saw and create some ?teeth? in the trip arm. Loosen the star wheel shaft mounts and move the shaft and mounts
away from the knotters about 1/8?.

To follow up on RickB's post- first clean the roller the trip arm rides on as well as you can. They get chaf and mud in there. Then take a thread restoring file ( generally available at tool suppliers) and find the thread closest to the notches on the trip arm. Start cutting new teeth into it. That fixed the same problem I had with my 68.

There is such a thing as the trip arm wearing away where it contacts the wheel, causing it to slip. I had that happen once on an old NH77 and just welded more metal on the arm and ground it smooth enough to fit in the wheel. Lasted as long as I had the baler.
