Sickle mower question

Ive got any older massey Ferguson
sickle mower. My grandpa used it. I
inherited tractor and equipment.
Is it hard to hook up?
Are they good for anything or should I
just leave it in the shed.

Thanks

Depends if it works and set up properly. I use a MF31 sickle for cutting grass hay. Easy to use. I would not use it for routine mowing of fields or outer lawns, a rotary cutter mower is better. If you plan to cut hay or mow along gullies or creek banks could be used for that.

Depending on which model of the sickle: Some of those Massey Dyna-Balance head mowers were considered some of the best units ever made. Still Sought after even today for mowing pond banks and ditch over hangs etc. because they can mow at any angle.

Course it can still be used for cutting hay as well.

What model does it have a pittman arm. Had a Mf44 for years very good mower could even trim trees along driveway. bearings were the downfall need to be greased often.

A lot depends on what model you have. I had an old MF sickle bar mower years ago and due to the safety release not working as it should have I broke a casting and did weld it back together but it did not hold up well so ended up selling the mower for parts since the casting that broke would have cost more then what we paid for it. It was a 3 point set up and if one parted it correctly it was easy to hook up but if you did not park it correctly it could be a pain

I have a Ferguson (not Massey Ferguson) F-EO-20 dyna-balance mower. I just used it yesterday. It's made up from the two I grew up using plus a few new parts. I got all the manuals on ebay. I'm trying to get new guards but it has been difficult. I have a new guard ordered and if it fits I will order a full set. They had at least 3 different cutter bars and the guards are not interchangeable between them. My bar has the tapered leading edge and universal guards won't fit.

My mower frame hooks solid to the sway bar brackets with bolts and tapered nuts. There is a left and right bolt. The left one is longer. As of last summer they were still available. The tapered nuts are obsolete but I got some tapered lug nuts from John Deere. I don't remember the part number but I got it from someone here. The top part of the frame hooks to the top link rocker pivot. There is a separate piece that hooks to the lift arms and mower wobble box area to raise the mower cutter bar. The sway bar goes over the left sway bar bracket bolt and to the lift piece. That's why the left bolt is longer.

I had to replace the bearings in the cast iron belt idler pullies. They can be found on ebay for a lot less than the update kit from AGCO. Remove the tiny snap ring and drive the bearing out to get the number.

Is it Massey Ferguson or just Ferguson? big difference as the Just Ferguson mowers date back to 1939 and are very hard to mount with parts not avaible but when new moded hay good. Now the newer models the easier mounting and still very good for mowing hay. Way to many models to begin to guess what you have. 3 point, side-mid mount or trail type will help to start to figure out what you have.
