24T Tucker Fingers Question

I have intermittent tying problems with my 24T baler that, when I check the troubleshooting section in my manual, could be caused by tucker fingers not being adjusted correctly. I"ve made the adjustment, but there seems to be a lot of slop/play in the tucker fingers. How tight should things be if parts weren"t worn? The fingers themselves have some play on their shaft, and the arm ends have a lot of play where they pivot on the fingers. Also, should the arms be straight and without bends? Just wondering if too much looseness in the tucker finger mechanism can cause problems even things appear adjusted correctly? Thanks for the help.

Mine is a New Holland but same knotter. Yes the arms have bends in them. I thought mine were getting to sloppy so I drilled mine out and put in a bushing. It tied very good before and ties just as good now. So sloppy doesn't seam to matter.

The tucker fingers are loose/sloppy where they pivot, and the linkage isn't much better.

If they are set io be where they need to be at the end of their stroke as spelled out in the manual, they are not your problem, IMHO.

Be careful that they are not to loose. Sometimes with wear they will return to home position and go overcenter. Then the next time it ties they will destroy the tucker finger shaft and the rods. It is enough of a problem that there are aftermarket shafts and fingers available. Finger Lakes equipment in Penn Yan NY makes an update kit that changes the linkage to a newer style with nice balls on the ends to eliminate the slop. My Deere dealer made the same kit for mine 25 years ago from Deere parts. I have also seen bales where someone welded a small tab on the finger bracket so it could not go back enough to go overcenter. Tom

Thanks guys for the info. I"ve requested a catalog from Finger Lakes to see about the tucker finger update kit; probably something similar to what"s shown on JDBalerParts.com. I set the tucker finger adjustment according to the book and the baler did well when not being fed large amounts of hay, but I still missed more probably 20 out of 600 bales. It seemed like when there were larger amounts coming in something was preventing the two strings from getting tied together.
