$8000 rake on a $5000 tractor

Bought this Krone rake a couple days ago. I hope it’s an upgrade from the 258 rake I sold. The old new holland was just too narrow for my 15 foot Gehl 2415 disc mower conditioner. I hope it wasn’t a mistake to cut hay yesterday. Calling for scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. I’m banking on the “scattered”

Here’s the Gehl 2415. The John Deere 4840 might be a bit much, but the hills get pretty steep here, and there’s no kill like overkill

I guess that's the difference between real farmers and us hobby guys. We would put the $14000 directly into the $4000 tractor and pull some implement worth about $100 with it. LOL

A tractor is only worth what the implement it?s pulling is ,and
you?ve got a real tractor made of steel no electronics and no
emissions and no recycled plastic and it will still be running in
another 50 years unlike the new junk

Looks good. Henry is over your way somewhere cutting hay with a triple mower on one of his bosses 7930's. He made the comment that he will cut more hay today than I will all year long. He has 120+ acres to cut today. I saw you called and was starting to wonder if you were still over there.LOL Tom

Not me I pull a $500 256 NH rake behind a $1000 David Brown 780 and keep the rest of the money and I'll bet my cows eat just as well as anyone's.And when I sell a load of calves
I can spend (or not spend) the money anyway I want and not make equipment payments.

A guy can do a lot of equipment maintenance for what a payment is and if not brand new or it?s of warranty it?s still going to break and then you?ve gotta payment and the repair bill

Traditional Farmer,

I paid cash for the rake. I sold a 258 New Holland for $1100 at an auction this past spring because it wasn't wide enough for the Gehl. I had been looking for a 12 foot disc mower/conditioner, but a 15 footer was cheaper. I paid cash for it last year. I also spend my money they way I want, and what I want is better quality more reliable equipment, and more comfortable tractors.

Looks good! I find myself in the same situation. I started with a few broken tractors. Got them mostly working and then got some broken implements and got them mostly working. With enough tractors to be okay with a break down, I feel it's the implements that are getting replaced/upgraded first and I have plans this year to do just that. Spending money on the implements makes sense as you're less likely to have redundancy there. Nice setup too!

I am sure will enjoy this new rake , no matter what tractor you use to pull it with. I have tractors over 50
years old that I use regularly and as long as they do the job , who cares? I bought a Kuhn speed rake two
years ago and I can pull it with any tractor that has a remote to raise and lower it, no pto needed, The new
rake do such a much better job of raking the hay so it can dry , compared to the old "rope makers" , the
side delivery rakes, which just roll the wet with the dry. Enjoy !!

Well, I guess I should have bought a 46T. This one doesn't quite reach when I'm dropping the hay wide.

Two things it doesn't like - rough ground and hillsides. My fields are smooth for the most part, but I also cut grass waterways, and they tend to be rough. It seems to handle them better than the bar rake, but I was digging at times. It also doesn't want to go as fast as I was hoping to go.

You know the feeling when you get it in your head that a piece of equipment is the absolute answer to all your needs, but once you own it, it doesn't meet your expectations? It's a great rake, but not the be-all end-all. Now I'm rethinking my dislike of wheel rakes.
