JD 851 Rake

I bought a good ol' JD 851 hay rake at an auction a bit back. I finally got some time to check it over and try to get it working. The lowering assembly to drop it to down and run the clutch was missing so I put a hydraulic cylinder in its place and that is working great. My issue now is while engaged something is binding up and stopping the rake from running as I go through the field. I can stop, back up a bit and go again and that clears it up most of the time, but this won't work for me as I need to be able to rake my hay field with it. I am looking for two things, the setup/operation manual and if anyone has any ideas on where to start looking to figure out the binding issue that would be great too. Thanks!

check that the strippers are not catching on a tooth as it comes around. On mine the strippers get bent so that when the reel comes around one of the teeth ends up on the wrong side of a stripper and it will bind up pretty good. If you aare using the steel teeth a tooth may be stradeling the stripper whenit comes around. You should be able to see the problem with it just sitting by turning the reel.

Had this happen with a model 858A of my brother's. Turned out it was the clutch engagement gears. Was supposed to be a 90 degree angle on the cogs, but with repeated engagement while travelling, the edges became worn so that over a little time and travel they would become disengaged. Stop and back up a few feet and it would again work fine for a while. But....it continually got worse to the point I was stopping and backing up every 30-40 feet. Took it apart, built up the worn gear and it has worked fine since. Since that time I never lower the basket to engage it while travelling. At that time you could get a new gear from Deere but the price was atrocious. Good luck.

Good News! She's working!

I got home from work and dug into it. It's a little embarrassing but that's how we learn sometimes. I missed a couple grease zirks, specifically the one on the front of the pto shaft from the gear box to the hub.

In the meantime I drained the grease and put fresh in and got it all lubed up and we went out to try it out. She spun really nice and didn't bind up. It did hit the ground a couple times and bind but as soon as I moved a bit more it went to spinning again.

If anyone has any advice on setting it up with the two adjusters I would appreciate it. Better yet, if there is a setup manual anywhere online that would be great too.

Thanks for the input!

Get in heavy hay and the problem will most likely show up again, the JD rake I had think it was a 640 never handled heavy hay very well anyway the New Hollands are far better.

Well folks, I got it working last night after work. I don't know what perfect is for a rake but this one is doing the job I need it to.

The issue was a U-joint that didn't take grease. I was able to free it up and get it to take grease, once I did that I could then spin the reel by hand and check the tines. A few were hitting the stripper, but I will take care of that too.

Next is to get the heights set right, if anyone can advise on that I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks for the help, I imagine I will frequent this site and try to pitch in where I can.

If anyone happens to have a operators manual for this thing I would be interested in that.
