Belts slipping on JD 335

Well I just bought a JD 335 and decided to break some bales and roll them out to test out the baler. The baler works great until the roll gets to about 2 1/2’ diameter. That’s when the belts start slipping.
I first though the hydraulics were bleeding off but the gate is not opening at all. It rolls a super sized tight bale right to the 2 1/2’ mark.

Any idea on what’s causing this?

Are all roller chains present? What condition is the rubber on the belt drive rollers?? If tailgate is remaining closed then I suggest to check for correct belt routing?

Several yrs back My neighbor who had a newly purchased model 457 asked why the belts wouldn't turn when pto was engaged. He stated he'd R&R a tension roller to R&R brgs. I stated he had installed roller correctly therefore belts were routed incorrectly. He stated no he had reinstalled roller by viewing a photo he'd taken. I told him to get the photo & sure enough I pointed out to him he'd installed roller incorrectly.

I had to have the belts resized on my baler several times as they do stretch. The rubber on my drive roll was really worn but it never slipped except in real dry straw. How tight is the spring for the belt tension? I had the spring break on mine once. Other than wear items that spring was the only part we ever put on the baler in thousands of bales of both hay and corn stalks. Did have problems once with baling hi moisture hay that was way to wet and it gummed up the rolls and caused the belts to slip. Tom

Texas Jim I’ll check tomorrow and make sure the belts are routed right.

The spring tension on my baler seems to be pretty tight. Judging by the paint it has never been adjusted. The baler makes a super tight 30” tall roll. Seems to me that once the bale was that big it would have no problem keeping tension on the belts.

I did notice that once the chamber is shut if the tractor is just sitting there idling I can bump the hydros and the tension roll will jump maybe 1/2”. I would think that little bit would make that much of a difference.
