Another Mower Question

I got my parts in that I ordered and the blade bolts don't have a castle nut just lock washers and regular nuts. Would you use the old castle nuts and drill a hole in the bolt for a carter key or just use what it like it is? Also the big nut they sent me to hole the stump jumper to the gear box was to big and it was a nylon type nut. Does anybody know what size it should be and should I use a castle nut there also? Thanks for all of your help with this and taking time to reply and help me out.

Yes.

Do you have the proper setup to be able to drill the bolt. You need special equipment to be able to drill and keep centered as in getting it a bit off you will not get a cotter pin in hole and slot on nut. I don't have the tooling for that and I cannot get a hole in anything centered.

I've got a drill press and a vice what other tooling would be required? I figure screw the nut down to where it should be when tight and use the flat sides in the vice and the slot in the nut to keep things centered. Don't seem to be a big deal. Am I missing something?

Use a lock nut to keep bolt from turning in castelated nut. Usually the bit will want to even if you have it aligned up perfectly the bit will on the round surface want to slide to the side. If you try it be sure to have extra nut and bolt on hand because untill you get the hang of it and everything set up just right you will probably ruin several bolts and nuts by getting the hole in at an angle with the bit going in one castlation but being off when it gets thru the bolt and will not hit the castlation on the bottom side of bolt after drilling. I do have the drill press and drill press vice as well. I do have to have shafts drilled in perfect alignmant quite often with bolt spacing of about 8" on 1" shaft and I now take things to a machine shop. I have not seen his toll but he is getting the holes all ligned up corectly for me. I ruined several pieces before taking things to shop. I rebuild old hay rakes for a dealer andget a lot of rakes with a broken bar and the 1" shaft slides inside the bars just perfect and the holes to bolt the teeth on keep that shaft inside the bar in place and is working better than trying to weld the bar, even yrying to weld the bar I still have to have that guide piece inside. You think you have things aligned correctly on drilling the bolt-shaft untill you try to put the marching piece to it and find oit that what is supposed to go thru the hole will not.
