Owner says it needs a new sickle arm? What is that..im not familiar with internationals but I'm gonna assume it needs a new wobble box..thats if they have one. And if that's the deal are they outrageously priced? They seem like they are a fairly easy machine to work on but i'm reading mixed reviews on them. I'd like to get another new holland but this is next door and it's cheap.

Over the last 15 years whenever the topic of the 990 comes up the consensus is that they are great. I used one for maybe five years until I moved on to a discbine. I agree that it is likely that it needs a wobble box. I would still take it if the price is good. With as many of them as there are still working they should still be finding their way into salvage yards, so you should be able to get the box if needed before too long.

Mowed a lot of hay with one. Long time ago , but if I remember correctly, just knives, a guard rarely, and one of the float springs snapped once. That was about it. Pretty good machine for their time. They don't float as well as the new ones, but then again they are a lot cheaper.

Speaking of not floating so well, that is certainly true. If you get it keep after the shoes because they will wear thin and even wear through. It is necessary to weld some plate over them every few hundred hours.

I have one I use every year - great machine for the money.

Just check the rolls, make sure they are OK, and make sure the big reduction sprocket has teeth - it is an expensive item to replace.
