Mower Question

I'm fixing up an old bush hog to use this year and one thing that was bad was someone tore up the 3 point hitch and the stabilizer bars that go from the hitch to the mower deck. I was wondering do they have to be flat bar or could I use chain? Thanks.

My self I will not own a brush hog with flat bars I will only buy them if they have the chains. That way they float along the ground so you do not get places that are super short and others that leave tall stuff

There is some concern about the bottom front of the mower catching on something solid, and the mower flipping upward and the tail wheel coming towards your head with just a chain.

Ideally there is a link that allows flexing but is mostly rigid to stop that from catching a person. One in a million, and a strong disagreement erupts here over this issue every time, I'm just pointing out the other side and it is all up to you.

This is what can happen if you go with a chain rather than steel struts to stabilizer your deck. Pin came out of the L/H lift arm and mower shifted enough to catch R/H tire, chain did nothing, but I was lucky enough to turn around when I did. Steel struts likely wouldn't have prevented it from happening, but would have slowed it down slightly.

Never had that happen with the hogs I have that had a chain between the 3 point munt and the hog. On the ones I have the chain is part of the hog and if a pin cam out it would pivot to the side not flip

It did pivot to the side, didn?t flip it, and when it came in contact with the tire it started to climb it. In the picture, I had already backed up to drop it down.

As I said no way it can happen the way the brush hogs I have are set up. the chain is behind where it hooks up to the 3 point and is part of the hog not part of the lift.

Guess what, mine is set up the same way, and YES it can happen. The chain is attached to the deck and to the back of the frame where the top link hooks up on mine as well. I can understand being skeptical if I was telling a story about a guy I heard about or something I read, but it happened to me, and I even took a picture to document it. You going to say next that just because a pto shaft has a safety shield on it, it can't hurt anyone? Just because something hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it can't happen, people with that type of thinking are the ones who are found injured or dead because of that mentality.
