John Deere Harrow Disk Offset Model 1200 series

Hello, Thank you for reading my question. I have an old John Deere Harrow Disk which came with a CAT D4. My investigation into its origin has me to believe it is a model 1200 series after visiting the JD dealer. I am replacing the bearings and shafts in the rear this year because they finally let loose a gang. When I bought it the left side was being held in by a chain. So I knew I was going have to do some repair. Unfortunately, the bearings are very pricey for an old disk ($250 plus each). Also two spool halves were cracked and broken ($150 and $190 plus). This is a nice heavy disc with good blades. I hate to just move and leave the old girl for scrap as the dealer suggested. I am thinking about finding less expensive bearings instead and rigging something up. Any suggestions? If I put $2000 into it would this disc be worth anything repairing with JD parts?? Or is the dealer right just move on. I will attach some pics to help clarify the model and parts involved. Thanks for any advice in advance.

Welcome to YT
Brgs that I see for model 1200 aren't that high $$$$. Were you needing brg & cast housing which is $222 90??
AK33797 Ball Bearing - OUTSIDE DIAMETER 3.54 INCHES ADD 62.55 USD

Brg & housing AK33799 subs to AQ28983 Seal - AGR 222.90 USD

Thanks Tx Jim, I need 4 castings (they are worn thru) and was able to save and clean up the other two. Both shafts were slightly bent. Was going to see if a machine shop could straighten them out. The spools Q28973 and Q28972 (one on each shaft) were broken where the casting slides into the bearing assembly. So I need two of those. One of the clevis angers or yokes Q29655 is missing an arm. I will need one of those unless I could weld something onto it and it holds strong. I do have MIG skills at a novice level. The others were bent...was gonna heat them up and straighten them out.

I will call Agri and get a quote... just some significant bucks to lay out. But maybe it is just what I gotta do... Thanks!

Thanks wvfarmboy, I am Northern California so shipping is a little pricey. They had axles for a very reasonable cost shipping added twice the cost that is why I am thinking about seeing if I can get them straightened. Thanks for your response!

I need to move to the Carolinas... LOL!

Tx Jim, I tried the agri supply web site and could not find the part number. I was wondering if I have the wrong place. Can you send web site information? Thanks.

welcome to yt tracks12, have you tried to take those bearings into a bearing supply shop? they might be able to cross them up to a different maker (same dimensions) hubs and shafts might be available trough after market suppliers? looking at your disc tracks, I would keep it, that is one H.D. disc. my vote load it and haul it to your new place :)

Back when I was employed by JD dealer I straightened several disk shafts utilizing a large hyd. press

Here's the spec's from JD for the brg.

Here's the specs for GW210PPB2 from Agri-supply BUT the races are different widths.

I have straightened disk axle with just a sledge and anvile, don't have to be 100% perfect. The bearings I don't know if you have the roller bearing or the whit iron bearing but I have seen the spools for the white iron bearings welded up that were broke.

Thanks Tx Jim... this info is very helpful. I will follow up next week with what I ended up with for others future reference.

Stay tuned!

Thanks Leroy, I appreciate the advice. Definitely going to try straightening first. As far as the bearings go, they are the to halves that slide into the bearing type, not the split bearing that goes around the spool type. If that makes sense...I will add a few pictures of the assembly and the broken parts. I included the bearing and spools and the plain spools. The bearings on each gang of seven discs. The bearing is a front and back type of picture not two separate bearings. The spools are two different ones so you can see the potential for salvage.

You can see that someone in the past welded pads on the original bearings. So welding the spools could be possible I am guessing. I might be able to salvage one but the other is split and looks pretty rough. Gonna make a trip to my local machine weld shop and get some advice. Thanks for sharing your experience. I will follow up later this coming week with how it all went.

CORRECTION: 1. There are 3 bearing assemblies per 7 disk gang. 2. The bearing picture is two different bearings one with the bearing in the housing and one with the bearing missing. I picked the wrong picture.

OOPS! Sorry for any confusion.

Check Ag Supply Co. Not quite the same, but I just replaced a fork on my bale mover. $99 at TSC, $53 at ASC. Lord knows how
much at the local JD dealer....

To All: I wanted to close out this thread with an update of what I finally decided and accomplished. The broken parts were clevises, a small spool, a large spool, two bent shafts and four worn bearing housings.

I purchased the worn bearing housing and the small spool. Both were beyond repair and had to be done. I decided to go with John Deere dealer because shipping from other sources made the purchase a wash.

Repairs:

Clevis- one was missing an ear and the other were bent an worn. I used a miller 211 MIG to build up the material where worn and added a dog ear where it was missing. A grinder and die grinder were used to recreate the hole the bearing sits in. A picture of the worst one before and after are below. It is compared to one that saw very little wear.

Shafts- Bent back to being straight using a 12 ton press from Harbor Freight. Took a little bit to do the set up and a little guessing at where the flection point was. I did not worry about the being perfect as was advised in your responses.

Spool- Conducted spark test on the Large spool. It seems to be steel cast, so my plan is to weld it back together. It is not done yet, so no pictures. My plan is to bevel at 30 degrees and then back fill the weld. I hope it works. If it doesn't I will post what did.

Thanks to all that helped guide me. What a great community and forum. So happy I found this place! TRACKS12
