Having a problem with my old spreader. First, I?m
not sure what make/model it is but thought a pic or
two would help. If anybody could help identify this
critter then I could address the issues in the proper
forum. Thanks in advance guys.

I was thinking the same but not sure if it might be a
Case. The castings on the spreader paddles have
L550 and L549 on them. Most any parts with a
number are preceded by the L,

Further investigation indicates a New Idea #12A so
I?ll hop over and see what I can find out. The apron
chain ratchet does stay engaged with the cams on
the axle so umm thinking there?s a problem with the
spring return mechanism.

It is a New Idea spreader. You will need to just look at the ratchets and dogs. They need to be free and all the springs in place. Most of the time when they quit moving the apron chain the lock dog is either stuck or the spring broke. This is the dog that holds the pressure so the arm can reset and get a "new" bite. If it is this one you will see the chain move and then kind of spring back. If it is Not doing that then the dog on the advance arm is not engaging. Once again stuck or broken spring. They get stuck/stiff when setting.

Thanks a bunch. After looking a little closer it appears the spring is too loose and won?t return the ratchet arm. Any idea if there are parts available? My research tells me it a model 12A.

Can you get some good pictures? I have 2 of those spreaders setting here that will be going to scrap yard when I get time. Also have the parts book

Sorry to lag behind here LeRoy, but I've been kinda busy. thank you for the clarification and the part that is broken is the return spring on the ratchet arm for the apron chain. I've located one and will be back in business as soon as it arrives. Thanks again.
