Looking at picking up a John Deere 335 baler. Anyone have any experience with them or the 375 which I’m pretty sure is the same baler just a foot wider.

Do they roll a tight roll of hay?
Any problems they are prone to having?
The baler I’m looking at still has paint on the inside of the bale chamber and looks brand new.

There's not very many of those smaller JD rd balers around me. I think they will make a good, tight bale of hay if operated correctly.

3 things I wouldn't like about them are they have no bale monitor with bale counter so therefore no automatic tying. The bale shape sensors are manual(require looking back at baler) not electronic in monitor. Also they have no separate tension cylinders such as the larger balers. The pickup attachment is same width as baler & I've grown to really like the Mega-wide pickup on my 467 as no converging wheels are needed to gather in a large windrow.

They are a great baler. I bought a brand new one and did thousands of bales of both hay and corn stalks. Rebuilt the pickup several times and replaced the drive chains twice. Never replaced a single bearing. The original belts were resized several times and I replaced the original belts to sell it. The only reason I sold it was because I wanted net wrap and the wider pickup. If you want a 4x4 baler they are as good as any and better than most. Ours had electric tie with single twine arm so it did tie slow but we could use it on any tractor. I usually baled with a narrow front 3020 as the narrow front would mash the hay down and keep it from dragging up under the hitch. I have baled as many as 150 bales in one day but that was a long day in good hay. The mechanical bale guides work good but my right side would stick but after a few bales you learn how to make a nice even bale and it became automatic. Dad pulled it a couple of times with his 40 hp 2040 with no problems. Ours was a late model with the green pickup. The last ones used a longer pickup tooth. I do not think you will be disappointed in any way if you buy it. Tom

We have a small operation of 20 cows and usually feed around 160 bales bales with our case 8420 a year. The case is getting worn out and is becoming a pain to use. Plus I think there will be a lot more hay in the 335’s rolls.

The one I plan to buy has hydraulic tie. I’m hoping this will be a big improvement over the 8420.

The electric tie broke on the 8420 3 years ago and we have been tiring bales with ropes tied to the twine arms.

The 335 will make a much tighter bale. In corn stalks we had trouble getting them dry enough that we did not get some mold. Sounds like a good choice for your size operation. We did make some hi-moisture balage but had trouble with the material sticking to the rolls. They made a scrapper kit to help with that but by that time we were chopping almost all the hi moisture feed. I even have a brand new scrapper kit that I picked up here still.Tom

Any chance you might have ever weighed a bale from the 335? I would guess the 8420 does good to make a 400lb and they are probably not that heavy.

I’m hoping I won’t have to put out hay as often now.

Thanks for the info. I should be getting the baler next week and I look forward to May when I can put it to use.

The only thing I was apprehensive of was the gate not being mechanically latched. I’ve read that if you develop a small hydraulic leak the gate starts opening while filling the chamber.

Jim I understand what your saying but honestly I’m just a small operator. I just need a simple baler to bale 150 rolls a year.

And the price on the 335 is hard to beat. I just can’t make it come out on paper spending more than $8000 on a baler.

Anyone else have any info on the 335?

I?ve 435 and 535 John Deere without having the
monitor hooked up and they still auto tie as far as
not having a monitor for the bale shape I did 1200
acres last year with a new holland baler and no
monitor and no bale shape indicators at all after
you?ve made a few its pretty easy to figure out how
to drive .

I agree that with practice one can learn to bale hay without a correctly operating bale monitor BUT I prefer for ""my neck not to ache"" from looking back at baler so regularly.

Thanks that’s a good post

I just paid for the baler today and it is supposed to be delivered either this weekend or next week. I’ll try to get pics up after I get it. I know it’s nothing fancy but it sure has me excited. Looks like a big step up from the case 8420.

Baler was delivered yesterday. Not a great pic but it was sleeting and snowing. [/img]
