Mower Conditioner minimum PTO HP requirement

Hey all. I was wondering if anyone would be able to answer my question. I have two mower conditioners. One is a Case 5 5 5 and the other is a John Deere 4 8 0. Both are older models. I have a Farmall Super M tractor. Wondering if anyone knows the minimum PTO horsepower requirements to run either of those mowers. Not sure if there is any difference between the two in minimum PTO HP requirement. Also wondering if the Super M will handle them. If anyone knows or has any experience with any of this input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Super M comes in around 46HP so it should play with them I have pulled an Old AC moco behind a IH340 and it is only around 31HP

My Grandpa pulled a Hesston PT10 for many years with a Super H Farmall. Pretty sure a Case 555 is the same as a PT10.

It's surprising to me that you have a JD 480 Mo-Co that is still in operating condition. That model was JD's initial attempt at building a Mo-Co. I remember when they were NEW and parts falling off of them while demonstrating them to prospective buyers.

The Case mower would be the better of the two if in the same condition. Those JD 480s where not very good when they were new. That was JD first attempt at a mower conditioner.

Yes the Case 555 was built by Heston and except for minor things like a different style of brace and things like that they are the same. I had the Case 555 version and pulled it with a 41 H Farmal, no super and smaller than a standard M with no problem. That unit is a little over 14' wide and we used a single action cylinder on it.

Tx Jim,

No kidding! That?s nuts. Yeah the 480 I have has been in our
family for over 15 years, my dad pulled it many years with a
JD 2510 and as far as I can remember aside from minor wear
and tear breakdowns, we haven?t had any major issues with it.
It will need a little TLC come spring as we haven?t used it in a
few years, but according to my father when he parked it it was
still in good working condition and our primary moco.

I would ultimately like to run the Case as my primary moco and save the JD as a backup. I think the JD will be quicker to get up and running and maybe be used for the first season, as I believe the Case has a broken shaft on one of the rolls, but in time I?d like to get it fixed and keep the JD as a spare.
