Woods L306 belt question

After mowing a couple acres yesterday the belt came off. I got out the manual and put it back on on for it to come right back off several times.

The twists in the manaual don’t say what direction to twist them. Do you just use commom sense? If it says 3/4 turn you turn it in the direction to get it to set right in the groove of the pulley?

Do belts come with a twist in them already? Laid mine out and it sure looks like it.

There MIGHT be a decal on the deck that shows the routing. It is also a possibility that the belt is shot and won't keep it's twist. I've had some V-belts that, once they reverse out, aren't going back.

I looked at the belt and there is worn area on it. I would relate it to a broken belt on a car tire, but not sure. I guess that could make it not keep the twist. I got the manual that shows the routing so I’m doing it right. I gain mow a short f
Distance before it comes off. Blades are rotating in right direction.
I guess I’ll try a new belt from somewhere

Thanks

Woods manuals I have seen have an illustration that shows the direction of twist. It is (somewhat) intuitive.

My L306 has a decal on the deck that shows the correct twist. Seems like 3/4 twist on one side, and 1/2 twist on the other. Tractor and mower are inaccessible right now, so I can't provide any more details. I do know for certain that if the proper twist is not given, that belt WILL NOT stay on.

I think that a Woods mower on a Super A has 3/4 twist on one side and 1/4 twist on the other. The reason being that the drive pulley sits perpendicular to the mowing deck. On something like a Cub, the drive pulley is parallel to the deck and has 1/4 twist on each side.

I do remember that the first SuperA/Woods I helped a friend work on was hard to figure out the belt routing.

Since you say yours has a damaged spot I would just get a new belt. Those belt drive systems are tough if the belt is bad. Look at Jay-Dee Enterprises for belts they have good belts are reasonable prices.

thanks to all. Looking for a new one now. Had to finish mowing with my 22 sickle mower

Once it has come off it is probably bad. What we used to tell customers is to re-tension the belt several times during the first couple hours of operation. What we used is after first 15 minutes, then after an hour, then again after about 5 hours. That takes out all the initial wear in, and stretch. Also important to remove the tension if the mower is going to sit for more than a couple weeks. If you remember the old polyester car tires that used to get a flat spot if the sat for a long time, same thing happens to belts wrapped around those small pulleys under tension.
