Plow Trip Question/Problem

Hey guys, so I bought the F145H 4 bottom semi mount plows Tuesday, when I got back I thought I would give them a try and they plowed great until the first bottom tripped and I can't get it to untrip. I tried backing up but with coulters that wasn't easy, I kicked it, tapped it with a hammer but its still tripped back. Anyone know the next step I can take to get it unstuck? I was thinking about a sledge hammer but don't want to break something. I greased the plows before I started but didn't over grease. They seemed easier to pull than my 1250 JD plows but didn't have quite the clearance for corn stalks.

On my F620 plow, I have used a 5 ft. pinch bar to reset the bottom back. But this was only after I manually tripped them to change shares. Never had a problem backing up to re-set them in the field. There is a large bolt that bottom rotates on that probably needs to be greased. It has a grease fitting, at least on my 555 and F620 plows. Al

Be darned careful. My right thumb doesn't work from doing that. I had a bar between the moldboard and moldboard brace prying down in it. The bar slipped and my hand went down between the moldboard and the razor sharp coverboard and I severed the tendons that pull my thumb back.

Has this plow been setting around (outside) for a while before you bought it? It's likely been years since any of the bottoms have been tripped, and things are rusty.

I had the same problem with an IH #60 plow. Worked great until one bottom tripped, then we spent the rest of the afternoon whaling away on it with a sledge hammer in the field. Once it started moving it finally swung back in place, but getting it moving was the hard part.

Go ahead and beat on it. The thing is designed to be dragged through hard packed dirt with an 80HP tractor hooked to it. Your feeble (by comparison) pounding isn't going to hurt a thing.

If everything in in good working order then trip bottom should swing back and forth easily. I do assume that this is not happening.

I had to free up all 5 bottoms on 666H plow last spring as if they tripped I could not get them to reset all the way so the latch grab them.

I have also had to replaced a few latches over the years on my old IH 540 plow.

See this link to some information that may be helpful on the trip assemblies. They should always be manually tripped in the shop before going to the field and everything must be moveable as it was new. Remove the pin to start with....sometimes a sledge hammer is needed. Pin needs cleaned and grease galley must be cleaned. Same goes for roller on the end of the throw-out arm...needs to be moveable and best to grease one pump or two.

They're a real pain to completely disassemble but once you get them right and keep them lubricated they're quite nice to use.

Tips for trip mechanisms on JD plows

I agree, the pivot for each bottom gets packed darned SOLID with old grease and plenty soil and would be advisable to drop all of them and clean them up..

While off, check and clean out the trip-latching area..

Any build up of dirt and debris WILL effect the Latching mechanism and should be suspected if a bottom gets to tripping too easily..

If you need new landslides, now would be a good time..Shins and Shares too if needed..

When you look at it, I'll bet that the Cotter Pins thru the castle nuts are rusted off..
