John Deere semi mount plow

I am looking at a john deere 3-14 semi mount plow for my Case 831d with 18.4x34 tires. We have loess clay type soil, will this work? Also dealer is asking $850 is this a descent price it's in KY

An 830 should have no problem pulling 3-14s. We have Heavey red clay here and 730s were pulling 3-14s. Would need to know the model and condition of the plow to know if that's a decent price.

From pics plow looks straight no bends in rods has coverboards no cylinder original paint and decal good shares and mold boards shins a little worn.

be close, just have to start shallow and creep it deeper till you find the sweet spot.

we run a 3-14 semi on a Farmall 706 gas(roughly same hp range)...it'll take the plow almost all the way down in heavy red clay, but its a work out.

They're hard to find. I remember one on an auction here bringing $1500 thirty years ago. The guy who bought it had a Ford 5000 utility and wanted that plow bad.

Dad pulled 4-16 trailer plow with his 830 gas tractor in heavy, sod bound clay. It was all that tractor wanted, but it plowed many an acre! I think you will just scoot right along with 3-14.

Your problem will be with your tire as yours are too wide to fit in bottom of furrow, you will be trying to run on edge of previously plow slab with it holding up your tire so you cannot get a good traction grip. For a 14" bottom you should not have wider than a 15.5 tire. Was always a lot of plows around me but never seen a 3 bottom semi mount, only 3 point in 3 bottom. Had to go to a 4 bottom to get semi mount. Would have liked to have one when I was farming. And the 15.5 tire was as wide as you would want in the 14" plow furrow.

It is funny, the 4 bottom sell for $150 or so, too big for the old tractors and they don't have the best clearance (I know I used one for a decade in cornstalks...) but the 3 bottom are rare and worth about what it is going for.

I found a 3 bottom at auction for $300, was tickled pink at that. My pair of 4 bottoms are for parts now, I got a newer big model for real farming in stalks.

I am running 480.80.38 metrics in furrow with a 3x14 plow which are a little wider than 18/4/38 tires

Hey Buddy...

Just buy a regular old 4x16" JD Semi-Mounted plow and take one bottom off it..

I shortened one here and no real problem...you can use a simple 4 1/2" angle grinder with the thin Cut-Off Discs to cut anything you need to cut..

Need any measurements, I can provide them..

You will need to drop all the bottoms anyway to clean out and free up the Pivots anyway, and you will only need to do 3...

No trick to it, just drop the 3rd bottom and move the rear up to that position, cut the excess frame off and shorten the lift and steering tubes..

I hope you were not intending to say "14"inch and meant 16"..!!

A JD "520/530 was rated for up to.3x14"..!!

I don't know where you are, but I could sell my 4x16" and it is Field Ready, Mouldbnoards were Greased, then Painted...NO Rust..

I am in Central, Ohio..

Have to disagree, I plowed THOUSANDS of acres with JD F-145 5-14 plow with 18.4x34 tires. Got plenty of traction off the furrow tire. Pulled that plow with 4 different 4020's and a brand new only three hours on the hour meter 4320. Tractor was delivered about 10 AM, hooked to plow and sat till I got there after school and plowed till Midnight.

A 3-14 semi-mounted plow for $850 sounds awefully high priced to me. Better be complete, cylinder, coulters, cover boards, new shares, no wear on moldboards. That's about twice the price of a trailing plow.

I have been looking for a good 4-16 JD semi mount plow for my 4020. I am in south-west Indiana so maybe a little far but I am curious what kind of price you may put on one like that if you were to sell it.
